According to a February 25, 2016 Public Policy Polling survey, 38% of Floridians are either unsure or believe that Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer, the California serial killer who claimed to have murdered 37 people in the late 1960s and early 70s.

The hilarious rumor started in March 2013 when the Twitter account Red Pill America jokingly tweeted, “#CPAC Alert: Ted Cruz is speaking!! His speech is titled: ‘This Is The Zodiac Speaking’” Speculation began to resurface once the Presidential campaign started gaining momentum.

Despite the impossibility that Cruz could be the Zodiac Killer given his 1970 birth date, 10% of Floridians answered “yes” when simply asked “Do you think Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer, or not?” The creation of “Ted Cruz was the Zodiac Killer” t-shirts and the explosion of Twitter accounts and internet memes which proclaim Cruz’s guilt may be to blame for the confusion among the state’s residents.

As for why these rumors are so widespread on the internet, some–like NPR–have found that “Zodiac Ted” memers spend their time tweeting and photoshopping graphics because “they think he’s creepy” and “they want to point that out, as clearly as they can.” NPR made sure to state that these social media users don’t actually think that Cruz is the Zodiac.

Although there have been no findings that these rumors have had any affect on Cruz’s campaign, the candidate has not addressed or denied the claims, but Twitter users can’t wait for the day when he finally does:
