Throughout the semester I learned how to extract and simplify the ideas behind many genres such as essays, news articles, speeches and other genres using different forms of analysis. This class provided me with many tools to help me gain a deeper understanding as I learned how to look beyond what the text meant and use my critical thinking skills to analyze more open prompt ideas. I have also learned which types of analysis I should use when attempting to find a better meaning behind certain pieces of writing. For example, I have used ethos, logos and pathos to analyze more persuasive articles or advertisements. Overall I learned how to look into all writings in a different perspective. Using the rhetorical analysis, I have learned to look at each sentence as if it has a significant meaning behind it. It has also helped me improve as a writer because I am able to apply these concepts into my own work. During this semester, I also feel that I improved on backing up my writing using relevant credible sources and then supporting the sources by explaining how it builds off my argument. I mostly learned this from the Toulmin method as I had to provide the claim, render the reasons, support it with evidence, then back the evidence up with the warrant. This method has helped me improve as a writer as it allowed me to think more abstractly.
