One of the most important things i learned during this semester was the toulmin method. The toulmin method gave me a better understanding of all the elements needed in an argumentative essay. When i first used the method for a homework assignment, it was very difficult identifying what were the elements used and how were they used. I was also confused distinguishing the difference between backing and the qualifier. Once i got the hang of using this method during the semester, i started to use it in my other classes for an argumentative essay. This method is very effective because it gives the foundation and building blocks for my thesis/stance. This method is complicated yet effective when writing an argumentative essay and I’m sure i will use it later on.
Another important thing i learned was code-switching. Project 2 made me realize how often i changed my language based on the setting and audience. Although i know the languages i use on a daily basis, I didn’t take the time to realize that i code-switched. It’s important to know when to use a language at a certain setting because language is more than a form of communication but rather how you represent yourself to the world.
