All the fans of Soccer, or Football, understand how hard it is to find a good place to play the sport in within the city. Most fields are either too small, have really bad turf, are too crowded, or are just too far away. Although many would play the sport regardless, Pier 40 is one of the better places to play soccer.
Pier 40 is a giant field with turf at the edge of Manhattan. It has many school teams and others who play sports such as soccer, football, baseball, and rugby come every day. Personally, I used to go there some days after school or on weekends with groups of other people to have a series of games.
The fact that the field is big enough makes it possible for everyone to actually play. There is no fear of kicking the ball too hard and losing the ball onto the streets or hurting someone else by accident. There are full sized goal posts and many other people waiting to play games. Also the quietness created by having the field surrounded by walls and fences helps with focus.
There is actually a system for people to play there. Each game lasts either 10 minutes or until one team scores 2 goals. After that the winning team stays on and the next team comes up to play. This makes it feel a bit more competitive since losing make you play for a short time and then wait for your next turn.
Pier 40 allows people to have a space right near the Hudson river where people can go and have fun on an open field.
