As someone who was shocked by the amount of children who live in New York City homeless shelters, I have asked my fellow peers around school if they were also shocked. Specifically, when I asked a couple of my friends if they knew 1 out of every 3 people in a New York City homeless shelter, they were equivocally as shocked as me. While I have not utilized any support centers or joined any clubs, I have plans to do so in the second semester. As a first semester freshman, I felt as if I have not needed to utilize any support centers, nor have had time to acclimate myself to college and join a club. However, since I have successfully adjusted to my new college lifestyle, I plan to go to the future club fairs to see what Baruch offers. Additionally, I have made a couple of older friends this year at Baruch and they have advised me to join specific clubs. As I intend to major in something business related, my older peers have advised joining business oriented clubs such as the “Wall Street Club.” While my older peers praised Baruch for offering such a large selection of clubs to join, they simultaneously warned me of the potential of joining too many clubs. Specifically, these peers stressed the significance of finding a few clubs that I am truly passionate about and dedicating my effort, time, and attention to those clubs. My older peers offered this piece of advice from past experiences and practices. Lastly, as I learned more and more about the New York City Homeless Coalition, I began to understand that the people who volunteer full time make a sacrifice to help less fortunate people. Additionally, to witness the sheer amount of people who are willing to give back to the community amazed me as the media always portrays negative news and actions.

What Does it Mean to Serve your Community?
Here at Baruch College, the regular college’s atmosphere is different than the honors program’s atmosphere. To be more specific, when I first came to Baruch, I was welcomed by very friendly people. All around, from the staff to other peers, almost every person was willing to help me and answer any of my questions. In fact, there has yet to be a time when someone here at Baruch was acting unfriendly, or even rude. On the other hand, while the staff at Honors Program at Baruch College is also super friendly, the atmosphere around my peers and professors is different. Specifically, when I am surrounded by my peers in honors courses, I feel as if there is an underlying competitive nature to the courses. As a whole, I believe this is what the Baruch Honors Program promotes as the program pushes students to be the best student possible. Basically, the Baruch Honors Program seems competitive to me because competition is a simply a byproduct of striving for greatness. However, since all the students I have encountered have been friendly and not overly competitive, I still feel comfortable in the scholarly atmosphere. Additionally, while my role is still being established and shaped as I am still breaking into the Barcuh lifestyle, I wish to have an active role in the Baruch Community. I intend on growing my role in the community by joining clubs and participating in school spirit. WIth so many extracurricular opportunities, I belive it will be easy to grow my role.
Hello world!
Hello everyone!
My name is Scott Hakimian, and I am a first-year student at Baruch College. Before college, I had attended Great Neck North High School. During my time at Great Neck North High School, I had defined my position on the academic integrity plain by shaping my academic values and morals. Just to be more specific, I am strongly invested in the idea that the motto “no excuses, only hard work” translates into success in the academic field. Additionally, I firmly believe that honesty and originality in the educational process elevate students into domains that some students struggle to enter.
As a student who has merely uncovered the very top layer of what Baruch College has to offer, I have set my expectations proportionally high. First off, while I have not indulged into the wide variety of business classes Baruch is notoriously known for, I am excited and expecting to learn tremendously from the business courses. Especially as my intended major as of right now is Real Estate, I believe the wide variety of Real Estate courses can launch me into the Real Estate field after college. Stemming away from academics and into extracurricular activities, I have very high expectations for sports and clubs. As I have a couple of friends who are on other CUNY sport teams, I cannot wait to attend soccer, volleyball, and basketball teams to see local rivals and friends square off against the Bearcats. On the other hand, I am excited to join and be active in Baruch clubs. From business clubs to sociopolitical clubs, many after school gatherings have presented and promoted their clubs during the two- and half-hour breaks Freshmen have on Tuesday and Thursdays. Lastly, one concern I have for my first semester is the three-month period to fly by. One thing I could take away by my last day of high school was four years is genuinely not a long period of time. I hope to spend every second wisely and enjoy one last “fresh start.”
