This week, we’ll be going to Nohohon. Located on St. Marks, it is easily accessible and a great place to stop by to relax or study.
Nohohon means a pleasant state of mind, calm; tranquil. That was how I felt when I was sitting there, interviewing Allyson Chua, the manager.
Nohohon originally started in Toronto in 2015 and in 2016, the location in East Village opened up. Although they have plans to expand their business, the creator of Nohohon would like to focus on the Toronto location.
Nohohon is on the second floor and could be easily missed since their sign is relatively small. If you do find it, consider yourself lucky. You get amazing matcha drinks plus a quiet seating area. Not many people usually sit around so more often than not, you get the whole place to yourself.
Nohohon is known to focus on matcha based drinks. As Allyson said, there is many health benefits to drinking matcha.
“Unlike coffee where you crash after drinking it, matcha provides you with the caffeine you need without crashing afterward.”
“You’re ingesting the whole leaf, unlike tea bags or powder so you can get all the benefits of drinking matcha.”
Their best seller is their Matcha Latte. I’m a big fan of Nohohon and I have visited this place on multiple occasions. I thought Furano Field, matcha and lavender drink, would be their best seller. Allyson let me know people get the matcha latte as their first matcha drink because it is plain and simple. Matcha mixed with milk. It helps them get to know matcha.
The Toronto location offers more variety of drinks but the NYC location likes to keep in small and simple. I personally like that because it means they can continue with the same menu and quality.
Like many businesses, Nohohon use social media to advertise their business. They also cater to colleges, provide their drinks to the school events to expose themselves to students. This is definitely a smart choice considering they are near Cooper Union, Parson, NYU, etc.
If you choose to visit Nohohon, they got a seating area across from their little tea shop. Free wifi. Great place to be to get work done or to catch up with friends.
