Students from Baruch attended the annual NBC Education Nation Summit. Hosted by Melissa Harris-Perry, the questions asked revolved around one theme, “What it takes.” Student panels asked questions about the education system and its issues.

Mark Zuckerberg Starts Spending His Billion-Dollar Charitable Fund

Mark Zuckerberg has become strongly associated with and has donated millions of dollars to a program called Startup: Education. What this charity does is takes statistics and opinions from surveys given to teachers and students and attempts to resolve any issues. It focuses on solving the problems using electronics or modern day techniques.

The Charter School Fight

Charter school families are against Bill De Blasio for wanting to charge the schools that have wealthy donors rent for using public school space. Charter school families marched in protest to this suggestion and claimed that charter schools are technically public schools. The Renaissance school is a perfect example of how charter schools are better than public schools.

A recently introduced new version of the online Common Application, has caused a lot stress to both students and admission offices. The undergraduate college admission application has been reported to have various defects, such as confusing wording, distortion of students’ essays, and problems with the payment process. These issues have created a lot of misunderstandings among applicants, and delays in the process of reviewing applications. Applying to colleges is a very stressful procedure, and the flaws in the new version of the application are only adding to the pressure put on the students and their parents.

Overscheduled Children: How Big a Problem?

Parents today are overextending their children and inundating them with extracurricular activities, both in and out of school. Parents themselves have very busy schedules and professional lives and no longer have the time to supervise their kids while they play outside or stay indoors, instead they set up schedules with activities ranging from piano to soccer to cooking classes. However, research shows that this is a big problem. Children no longer have the time to just be kids instead they have a schedule which demands a lot of time, effort, and responsibility. Strides have to be made by parents to make sure that they have a balance of extracurricular activities as well as time to just do nothing.

British Students Seek American Education

Within the last few years British high school students are becoming increasingly interested in American colleges such as Harvard, Columbia, and Berkeley. Drawn to the more diverse opportunities American schools have to offer and increasing financial aid and British student loans available, more and more are considering flying overseas for their education.

High school equivalency exams become more challenging as the standards in these generalized tests have increased. The increased complexity of the test caused students to struggle in studying and educators more anxious in preparing students for the test. Some educators worried that this higher standard wouldn’t benefit all students, while some others felt that the standard wasn’t high enough.

Boston bus not picking any kids up!

Boston bus drivers are hesitant to go back to work because they prevented 18% of Boston students from going to school. While they were on strike for higher pay, better health insurance and declining the new GPS system students were not able to get to school and missed a day of learning. The Mayor of Boston was furious and through the radio said the issues the drivers were protesting about were “not real issues.” Parents were distressed from this protest because they did not know about it, and one parent even shared how her autistic son was distressed from having to take the city bus.
