The advertisement presented is at first ambiguous, as the viewers of the video encounter students in a classroom setting. Once the task of drawing is given to the children, viewers are taken on a story revolving one specific child who silently and continuously draws something very obscure. Continuing with this mystery, viewers are not easily able to distinguish the demographic and target audience of such an advertisement. All that is shown is the display of authority figures cautiously looming over the child, attempting to milk out an answer from the boy. The child’s choice of using negative and positive space to create his image alarms the adults because it is something unusual and different from what the parents and teachers have seen before. As the pieces of the puzzle come together and the image begins to take form, the authority figures in the video, along with the viewers, become aware of the child’s interpretation of the original assignment: to draw whatever comes to mind. The target audience is made clear as the end question is presented. The video teaches adults to encourage creativity and originality as the boy thought outside the box, preventing himself to be restricted by a piece of paper or colors of the rainbow when one can beautifully depict an image simply with the use of black and white. The progression of the video overall attempts to reach out to adults by stating that it is wrong of an older presence to assume a child’s unusual, unique, and uncustomary ideas to be abnormal and deviant.

The music in the visual advertisement seems to be deliberately chosen. The creators of the ad want the viewers to believe originally that there is something wrong with the child and the fact that he will not stop coloring. The music is classical and gives the advertisement a sad and hopeless feeling. Paired with the visual provided, it gives the impression that the child needs help. Besides the music and dialogue, the only other noise heard is the sound of the child coloring. It makes a scratching sound when the crayon meets the paper and it seems to block out some of the music, like a needle scratching a record. It seems to draw some of the attention away from the music to the child until the viewer learns that the child was okay and was completing his assignment.

The advertisement promotes a very clear message of parenting. In the end, the film shows the text “How can you encourage a child? Use your imagination”. When the teacher assigned the students to draw anything they have in mind, this kid seems to color the paper black. The teacher then felt strange and went to a home visit. The family then took the boy to a psychiatrist, who was unable to figure out what the boy’s drawing, and they even invited a group of doctors. Later, the teacher found puzzles from the boy’s drawer, they figured the boy may be drawing a set of puzzles. That’s when the film comes to an end, the boy had been drawing a whale in real dimension. This kid’s imagination and drawing ability are incredible. This film advised people to encourage children’s creativity and imaginations. This kid had been put into a mental hospital but the adults didn’t give up on him. The adult characters represent normal people but they are great because they didn’t give up on the child. The boy character was exceptional, he thinks outside of the box. At a point, his creativity was not been accepted by others, but eventually, his imagination surprised them. We should all give kids a room for creativity, they are brilliant with their imagination.

Wow, what a great choice! This is quite moving, and you all did a very nice job discussing content, text, sound (the sound of the scratching sometimes cancels out the music, a very nice observation!) and a very nice comment on the use of negative and positive space. In class, we’ll look at this together, so try to look even more specifically. For example, he’s not just coloring; in fact, he’s using no color at all, and for much of this it looks like he’s just trying to make each page completely dark. What kind of tone do you think this brings to the ad? And does that affect how we finally see the whale at the end?
Well done!
This was a nice video . I’ve actually saw this video before and my initial thoughts were how it stresses the importance or rather promotes imagination. But parents need to encourage their kids to be more creative.
I thought that the video was quite nice and unique because it presented a message that’s not always appreciated in modern society. It shows the importance of creativity and I think the advertisement does a good job of showing this through the way that at first the boy is considered weird and is taken away from others but then everyone realizes his creativity and appreciates him. Overall it was a good video that shows something many people do not think about.
