Paper 3: Extended Writers Reflective Letter

The video, “Dream Act” is a remix of my paper, “Education Equals Success.” For my multimedia project I decided to tell my story using different types of videos, pictures and combing them into one. The audience for this video is undocumented students, their families and people who oppose the bill. After the feedback that I got and taking a moment as I saw my video being played on the screen I think my intended audience are not only the people who oppose the bill, but the college students. Of course undocumented students are aware of this bill but aren’t eligible to vote when it comes to elections or picking a new candidate to be president of the U.S.A. who will help these students. These college students can help the undocumented because they have the power to make a change with them. We as the Dreamers would love to make changes, we are starting to slowly make change, such as The DACA that passed in 2012, which protects the undocumented students and families. These college students not all but most are willing to hear us out and most do want to get involved. If we don’t follow up with them, nothing really changes. The video I made or any media that shows what the Dream Act is a way to start helping the Dreamers and bring more attention to this bill.

The purpose of the video is to inform the audience about the Dream Act. Again after getting feedback, I think the purpose of this video was to also show that there are many Dreamers across the United States, not only me that want to succeed in this country. This Dream Act wouldn’t be costing anyone money instead many people would benefit from it. I wasn’t even aware of how much benefits regarding money wise that the Dream Act could bring to the U.S.A. For example, it would bring $329 billion over the next 20 years, leading to 1.4 million new jobs and at least an additional $10.2 billion in tax revenue. The genre of the video is informative with a personal anecdote.  I chose to tell my story because in someway it’s almost the same as any other Dreamer’s story. I wanted the audience to understand that this bill is not just to get residence even that would take up to six years. We just want to go to school. That’s all we want. As for me I just want to learn. I want to worry about my taking at least three or four finals and not worry about how will I pay my tuition. With the Dream Act these undocumented students would be receiving financial aid. Many don’t have the luxury of going to school and attending three or more classes. Money is one of the many things that stand in the way of the Dreamers goals.  As I was watching the video with my classmates, it got the part where I was explaining the benefits, I wanted to talk even more depth to them on how these students would give back to their country they grow up in. The more people know about this issue the better it is.

The medium that I used for this project was iMovie. I used different types of videos, pictures that show what the Dream Act is. I chose to use iMovie because I have worked in the past with this medium and with a video I think it grabs people’s attention especially with a recognizable song or phrase. I didn’t have any problems with iMovie. Just like everyone in class said proving our argument in less than 3 minutes is hard, getting all the points you want to show is tough because you have to take out some points outs and elaborate on one to make your argument more powerful. It is hard to make our point in less than three minutes but it is doable. The argument that I’m trying to prove is that the Dream Act would make a positive impact on our society and by passing this bill it would help undocumented students go to college and they would be resisting stereotypes not only that but this bill would help our economy. I think the video did show my argument.

The way I started my video was by first presenting the cons of the Dream Act. I spoke about the cons that people would have but I showed them the solutions. I also spoke about some statistics on how these students would help. I started my video with Donald Trump’s speech about the stereotypes of Mexicans and other cultures. I chose Trump’s speech because I feel that he and his speech are a symbol of the people that are against the Dream Act. His name is mostly linked to racist comments and to what some consider him as a business mogul. He was the right person to start the video not just because it grabs the audience attention but in these recent months he has made controversial comments about immigrants and their cultures. Following his speech, I showed a small video of immigrants telling the world what they aren’t about themselves. I showed  facts about immigrants. Lastly, the closing statement I spoke about was about immigrants just in general. One song that I used throughout the whole video was John Lennon, “Imagine.” I think this song is appropriate because it talks about peace and happiness. This bill does open up other issues mainly immigration. There are rallies and people tend to get overheated and fight. This song represents the opposite.

After the feedback I got back I wouldn’t mind sharing my video . I am going to leave it up on YouTube for people to see it. I think anytime someone talks about politics there is always a debate so, is my video ready for the public view? Yes, it is. Immigration is always an issue and people can either learn about this bill or choose not to. I really like my project and I wouldn’t change anything about it. It did take me a long time to make it good, including the music and images. I spent at least a good five minutes picking the right pictures to go up on the final project and at least 30 minutes picking the right videos to be cropped and be combined. The song “Imagine” is perfect for the Dream Act. It’s always scary to tell people that you’re an immigrant because you never know what their reaction might be. There are people who aren’t too fond of immigrants, undocumented students because they think of the stereotypes that are out there but there are people who understand the immigrants or Dreamers. Putting my video on YouTube will be reaching a wider audience but this video has one main point to show and that’s to let people know about the Dream Act and its benefits.
