Contemporary Theater

Contemporary theater has to be by far one of the most interesting forms of theater that I’ve learned about this semester. “Hamilton” breaks most of the cookie cutter rules for a Broadway musical and thats what makes it amazing. I have not seen it yet but the more I hear and read about it, the more I want to see it. The reviews about “Hamilton” just simply explain how it’s so great because not only does it include most genres of music not usually in Broadway musicals, but also how the people would most likely probably be during colonial times. It’s considered a breath of fresh air and because of the many rules it has broken, that’s what gives it an edge and makes it unique. “Starring Me” was fun to read because I love immersive experiences like that, because I feel as though they allow you to experience a different reality. There’s one that comes to Manhattan every halloween that’s considered to be a “haunted house” but it’s actually an immersive show that highlights the dark elements of life and what people actually go through. I forget the name and can’t find it online but I didn’t get a chance to go last year but I will definitely make it this year. I think it was called Blackout but I’m not sure it might be another one.

Scavenger Hunt Response

The scavenger hunt was pretty intense(mostly because of the rain). Also because people were extremely competitive. It was interesting to see people I’ve seen in the classroom calm and then see a whole different side of them on Tuesday. I also enjoyed having to work together as a team to try to attain was many points as possible and interact with students from the class that Ive barely ever spoken to before. I learned so many new things from this scavenger hunt( which I appreciate the most). I’ll never see NYC the same anymore, which is honestly a really good thing. I feel like an accomplished “theater geek” after everything I’ve learned in this class so far and from this intense scavenger hunt.

Blog Response

I think the purpose of globalization in theater was to have the ability for everyone to relate to something if not each other. Making fun of common customs or culture of specific races or of everyone just allows people to come together because it allows a lot of people to keep on the same page but in a comedic way. The fact that theater brings serious world issues to light is constantly brought up.

A Doll’s House

I remember reading this play in high school and not understanding why Nora left her entire family. I mean I still don’t agree as to her leaving her children. But now being reminded of it, I understand that she felt too controlled and it really is a dark tale when you analyze and realize that she didn’t have say much less a choice in her life. During the time it was written I can imagine how shocking it must have been to audiences.

Museum of the City of New York

I’d been to this museum before a few years ago. Despite being sick I really took in a lot of knowledge and was fascinated by what I found. What stood out to me the most was the area where they were showing clips of women in Yiddish film. It was so interesting to see how different they were portrayed than women today in film. They were very funny and my favorite out of all was when the female flapper taught the group of men how to dance, this clip was from “Ost und West.”

Blog Response:NYPL visit

Since I was sick yesterday, I had to visit the NYPL myself but I brought a friend along. We were both intrigued with the archives of old newspaper articles in certain books were so well kept. I was also really interested in the area where you can listen and watch items on the archives but I wasn’t allowed to do a walk in because it was past 5pm. I definitely want to go back.
