Author Jane E. Brody, in “America’s Diet: Too Sweet by the Spoonful,” explores Americans’ excessive sugar intake. From there, she analyzes the different sources of sweetener in America’s diet, especially the ever-controversial high-fructose corn syrup, and whether they yield different effects on the human body or not. Brody claims that the reasons protesters of high-fructose corn syrup use to support their stance are simply “frivolous.” Instead, she concludes, “Neither ordinary sugar — sucrose — nor high-fructose corn syrup contains any nutrients other than sweet calories.” Food is an important element in our American culture; however, we must find a balance in our foods or else we continue to head down the endless journey of food-related epidemics such as “obesity, diabetes and heart disease.”
