Still a dominant form of transportation in the city, driving can be one of the best ways to get around. But because of the fairly inexpensive public transportation system and abundance of businesses within walking distance of many places, some people don’t find a need for driving. Not to mention how expensive it is to own a car due to the high insurance premiums. All these things set aside, here are a few tips for driving in the Big Apple:
First, avoid rush hour at all costs. Monday – Friday between 6AM-9AM and in the afternoon from 4PM – 7PM, it is not recommended to be on major roads because of congestion. If possible, stay on local streets or park far from a congestion point and walk the rest of the way there.
Second, utilize the free bridges connecting the different boroughs together. The Queensboro Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge are all free bridges connecting Queens or Brooklyn to Manhattan. Remember that you can leave Manhattan and cross over to New Jersey by way of the George Washington Bridge or the Holland Tunnel. It is free to exit the city but you will have to pay on the way back.
Third, if you do plan on crossing through the bridges and tolls multiple times throughout your stay, it’s recommended that you get an EZ Pass. It is an electronic pass that is attached to your car’s windshield and helps one speed through the lanes and also gives you a significant discount when paying tolls. The Verrazano Bridge and the Midtown Tunnel are two popular access points for which you will have to pay a toll. They usually vary in price, between $5 – $15 one way.
Lastly, remember that you’re driving in New York City, one of the busiest cities in the world. There are pedestrians jay-walking all the time, the streets are littered in people on bikes, and the congestion causes road rage at levels not seen anywhere else. Also, be mindful of when the president is in town and make sure to avoid traveling through Midtown Manhattan during that time. If not, be ready to spend a good couple of hours in grid locked traffic.
And above all else, pay attention to the road and be very cautious and careful when driving.
Safe travels!
