Jacobean Inspired – The Devil’s Advocate
Most Jacobean inspired literature consist of sex, incest, violence, revenge, etc. When I think of the Jacobean period, a film that comes to mind is “The Devil’s Advocate”. This film relates to literature from that period in many ways.Throughout the entire film; sex, violence, and revenge are being displayed. Normal for films of our time. But what stood out to me the most wasn’t so normal. It was the relationship between Christabella (Connie Nelson) and her father, John (Al Pacino). Their relationship was a lot more than just father and daughter. In one scene, Christabella and her father went as far as having sexual intercourse with one another. Not only was her father having incestuous relations with her, he also acted as her pimp. In another scene, John offered his daughter, Christabella, to his son, Kevin (Keanu Reeves) in order to conceive a child, the Antichrist. Both scenes display extreme incestuous behavior between father/daughter and brother/sister. Just to sum it up, this film just as the Jacobean period, represents immorality at its best.
