Wei’s Tour to Museum of Art And Designs

I went to the Museum of Art And Designs last week. There were plenty interesting objects, tools and software.  Which including jewelry, clothes and shoes, blow, sing and talk to build up shape with a microphone and software, shape tool, scan tool that scan a actual person etc…. I think the most impressive thing was scanning the actual person in the spin by Maker-Bot.  The software can scale the print down and make print out of person in plastic or most of materials. I also fascinated by the jewelry and accessories made from 3D print. They look so real and it is hard to imaging them were all made with a 3D printer and software. The colors and materials were varied. It is possible to believe it will move to next step with endless possibilities.

World Vision in Six Week-Replacing All Missing or Broken Lids

Replacing all missing or broken lid with my product and service. I went to several store that sell containers. I need to design (potential software) and customize lids suitable slot to fit the other part.  It shall make off durable, easy to use and affordable materials. This idea begun with my  broken pieces of microwave food containers’ lids. The containers are one glass and one usable plastic, they can still be using. Is there a better way of making it? That’s find out.

Studio Exercise 2: Five Forms of X Five Materials

As you can see the following door knot and vase were not very successful. I do not know how to mesh them into the shapes I like.

Future Vision

I like food, its container and packaging, I also like decoration and accessory. I like to share some of my previous thoughts on Blackboard.

“I can have artisanal life like the activities I do in daily life, from the clothe I wear to the  food I eat. I choose clothe, footwear and accessories from matching color or tonal mode……I think process food has long history of “artisanal”. For example candy is very popular among children and adults. They came with different taste, hard and soft, various color and shapes. Imaging sugar, fruits, food extract and food coloring melt together, mold into shapes in the candy manufacture. They were packed, distributed, ship into retailers or vending machines. With 3D printer, it can print food out without mold. May be one can make interesting candy shape out of animal, truck, or action figures etc….”

There are several websites provide information  3 D printer’s food fabricate process. The most interesting are “Eat your face” with 3D printing, Update: Andreas Forgacs on 3D Printed Meat, and NASA Funds 3D-Bio-Printer Development to Combat Universal Hunger. The food 3 D machine scan form like face, they can either print with chocolate in liquid form in up and down motion, then it dry up and harden. It could also curve and cut face on chocolate. Amazingly that meat and leather can  bio-print now. The meat was process, serve as inject in the tube, bio-print into sheets, add ingredient, then cook as delicious meal.  It was stated it taste same as regular cook meat. I have not taste a print meal before, I wonder how it taste? Imagining you have a seamless kitchen and become a digital chef. Even though I heard the price of the food in not cheap. It is certain way of preserve food, portable and probably would solve temporary problem of world hunger. I also interest on food container and packaging. They can be paper, plastic, aluminum, glass etc. The form of material and shape can be vary. With 3D printer, it can print out variation forms on single design. I am sort of exciting about this. I may try to make experiment on 3D bio-printing in the future.

I also like decoration and accessory. I learn they can also be 3D printed. I was fascinate some people have print their own shoes and test them. The New Balance shoes totally made of plastic. The yellow green and grey shoes look nicely. I thought about few weeks back, but did not do anything about it.  Following is my thought on making 3 D print of shoes.

“If 3D printer can make and melt down any materials, I will design my own footwear.  I want to made my own footwear because it is really hard to get  them both comfort and good looking…… It about shoes fit my soles not the opposite.  I could measure shape of my foot and made any materials of shoes I like….awesome!”

A new break through, Doodle 3D printer Accessory enable 3D printing of drawing. It is an App allow people manipulate their 2D drawing into 3D drawing and print it as 3D object. I think it will be helpful for anyone. There are some many things need to learn about 3D printing and so many tools available out there. Are you ready to make you move? What’s your next invention?

Personal Reflection

During the progress of course, I read the Maker by Chris Anderson, learn about 3 D hardware and software. I also research, plan, design and start to make actual product.  We have weekly blogs at blackboard. I answer blog questions and give feedback to classmate. During the Jump star sessions, the group gather together. We talk to each other, distribute tasks, brainstorm ideas, conduct research, feedback on each others’ design and progress.  I guess the group can elaborate more on member ‘s ideas and do better job in integrate with each other. The team members separate and go on each one’s own way mostly. I read and write response to articles. Participating on process of research, develop idea, writing reports, and sketch potential design to solve the need. Everyone has their life besides this class, we have other class, work and family etc…. It was difficult to find time to implement tasks together. We try to communicate over phones and emails. For every time now and then, I may be late on task. But I try to finish them on time, I always try to follow through others’ idea and share mine frankly. I try to write down assignments on my to do lists and their due date. I try to break down tasks and allot time for this and that, I find it really helpful. I love food, I also like to try different food. I am always interest on how things work. I can fix simple things with similar fine prototype on the side (ex. staples). I am not afraid of challenges, I like to try different approaches to a task. I can quickly accept failure and get my feet back on ground. One thing bad about me is I often hesitate to take the role of leadership, but I am in progress of change it  and taking more responsibility on the team.

Studio Exercise 1: Multiple Blocks

wymultipleblockslider

As I trying to figure out a way to work on the application and explore all the possibilities, the block reminded me of childhood. As a kid I played blocks, and spent all my time on the playground. I decided to build a slider. I was downloading all nine blocks and try to build them into one pieces. I find it a bit challenge to get it into the way I exactly want it to be. I had originally a more complicated 3D block slider, and it is not nearly making sense. The size, the perspective and position are way off they suppose to be. This version is more simple and easy to build and make sense. The block slider made with a half cylinder which I made on the SketchUp, a cylinder and a arch downloaded from classmates. The arch serves as a foundation, the long cylinder links the half cylinder and the arch. The curve area make it possible for the slide to sway. The challenge was to make the half cylinder fit and provide space for cylinder and connect parts together. Of course the position cylinder determines the space and it needs to intersect the half cylinder and attach on the middle of upper curve. A child can push it down, sit on it and then slide down.

Studio Exercise 1: Building a Block

Building the half cylinder was a quite challenge for me. It involves with making a circle, use pencil tool to draw a line to divide the circle, select parts to erase and push the half circle up.  That does not sound complicate at all. However, I did not make it the same exact measurement in the SketchUp program during the steps of making it.  I was just starting to use the program.  It seem difficult to do because I was not familiar with the command of measurement tool. Finally I was able to make it with instruction of Professor.
