“Welfare Queens”

So in “Let them eat Ketchup” I thought it was interesting how she refered to those women on welfare as”welfare Queens” because these women are never going to get off the system- insteasd of using this system as a stepping stone they just make it their lives. Another interseting point that the author made was that most people that are on welfare are whites – not Blacks or Hispanics

What I think is the main problem with the miss conception of welfare recipents being percieved to be just Black or Hispanic Is the people falling for whatever is fed to them through the media. I think that policy makers and varies people in government still hide their racism behind policys and programs that are suppose to uplift people from poverty but instead were created as a way to keep a certain group of people down and out. Yeah, there maybe “welfare queens” but those small few don’t represent all of the race or for that matter, races of people who recieve welfare for the right reasons. To be frank: most of the tax payer money isn’t been spent to do the responsible things for people who do really need the help, it’s going to programs that are most expensive and are set up to break down family household, keep the minority from having a stable household, to build jails, build programs that take away minority children because the mother isn’t able to care for them properly because she has to give her entire life to the system for the little help they do get. What type of system purposely do this do another, it sad but true. Yet people can still seem to find the equality and the liberalism in the system. Boy!!!!! Does the media do a good job at hiding the true facts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think labeling mothers on the welfare system as ‘Welfare Queens” is entirely judgmental and ridiculous. We do know that some people take advantage of welfare programs and try to fool with the system, lying about their status, etc… however despite these few there are others who desperately need any form of help/ aid they can get. I also believe that state governments have the right to do a formal background check to see if a person is eligible for help and they every right to do continuous checks to see if the person still needs help…I also think that people on the welfare system should do as much as they can to provide for themselves and their families without having to completely rely on welfare…if you’re capable of having babies, you’re capable of having a good job to take care of these babies. Education also plays a key part…if you receive education, then I’m sure you know the difference between right and wrong, and whats good for you… in other words, don’t have kids if you know you can’t afford to keep them or provide for them. Just be responsible in your decisions, it goes a long way when it comes to your future.

I agree there is always going to be someone who doesn’t follow the rules.. I also think that if you know you can’t afford to raise a child give it up for adoption or use a condom.

I recently saw funny commentary on comedy central (kinda mad I don’t remember which one – either Daily Show or Colbert Show) which talked about corporate welfare queens. It starts with the premise of don’t blame the Enron Corporate CEO’s and the like for what they did to the companies. It was their upbringing. They went to the best schools; they learned about corporate loopholes; to that effect. I know it doesn’t sound funny; but you had to watch it to get it. It was over 2 weeks ago and I didn’t pay too much attention to it.
