It’s a shame that those who live off the sweat of others, making millions a year, are the ones that dictate who and what the definition of poor is, along with what their standards of living should be. The “poor class” or welfare seekers, is brought about through the lack of resources, discrimination, and disregard that is afforded to them. If we want a better class to emerge from these welfare recipients, we should give them the tools they need to better themselves and their children. A family of four, or a single parent, living off minimum wages, can’t provide the same lifestyle, education or attention needed by children to grow up and become better citizens. Instead, they go to low budget public schools up until the point that they must leave school and start to provide income for themselves and often their families. How can they save money and build any type of foundation for a better future when the only jobs in their reach, barely afford shelter and some food on the table. As always, a very low priced is placed on the value of human beings time and labor.

In Maja’s response paper she calls these “tools” something like a fresh beginning (i forget the exact words) — and it raises an important question – what is the minimum set of ‘tools’ that we should provide people? In a lot of ways this is about establishing or thinking through what a minimum necessary condition or environment is, to go along with the minimum necessary budget that factors into things like the poverty line.
