Lesson Materials: PowerPoint Presentation
Lesson Objectives: Understand syllabus policies; understand the sequenced writing approach and major assignments; learn about classmates and professor; produce a writing sample
Connection to Major Paper/Project: This class is connected to the first major assignment because it includes an overview of expectations, assignment requirements and how to complete these.
Connection to Course Goals: The class encourages you to think of writing as a process, highlighting the sequenced writing approach.
Activities:
- Introductory Scavenger Hunt: The professor will facilitate introductions and go over basic course information such as section, office hours, etc.. You and the professor will use the scavenger hunt worksheet to answer a series of questions that focus on introductions and give you the opportunity to meet one another and say something about the person you just met.
- Syllabus and Sequenced Writing Approach: The professor will go over the syllabus with you, including policy on absences and the importance of conferences.
- Background Survey and Class Folder: Please complete this survey to learn more about the professor and so that the professor can learn more about you. Also, please email me your @gmail.com address to: [email protected]
- List of Topic Choices: Follow instructions in the PPT above and use the handout with a list of topic choices to help you identify a focused and relevant unique topic to research and write about throughout the semester.
- Diagnostic writing: Using a Google Document, write as vividly and completely how you became interested in your chosen major. Your writing should be a narrative, and should capture the thoughts and motivations you had and have about your selected course of study. You can (but don’t have to) include dialogue, and you should absolutely use descriptive writing that shows and doesn’t tell your reader why you chose the major you chose.
