Good design

good ad1good ad2

The two above photos are great examples of a good advertisement. They’re both clean, simple, and straight to the point. They do a good job of creatively incorporating the images and typography to convey their product’s message. Right away, the audiences have an idea of what the ads are all about.

Bad design

bad ads2

The two above photos are bad examples of design. In both ads, there are too many things going on. With the first ad, there are too many words. It makes it difficult to read and pinpoint the message. For the second ad, there are too many images and too many colors. It’s not invoking any feeling and it makes it difficult to read the words on the ad due to the overwhelming amount of colors.

What is graphic design?

After reading the article, I’ve come to understand that graphic design is a process that incorporates images and words to communicate a certain message or idea. Two main tools involved in graphic designing are images and typography. Image-based designs can be in a form of a photo, hand-drawn pictures, paintings, or other graphically created images. Designers use images in order to convey, represent or portray their client’s message. Type-based designs is another way of conveying the message. Not only do words spell out the actual message, it can be manipulated to invoke a certain feeling or mood, or to just simply capture the audience’s attention. Logos, symbols, and logotypes are identifiers that can also be used to represent an idea or a message. It is the designer’s responsibility to use images, symbols, and typography to properly and creatively present their client’s message for the audiences.

Now that I now what graphic design is, a question I would like to pose to the author is, what kind of careers are available out there for graphic designers? Based on the article I can conclude that a graphic designer can work at a corporation’s marketing department, an ad agency, film industry, magazine agency, or a book publication agency. There are plenty of other possibilities but I wished the author pointed this out in the article to help guide young aspiring graphic designers to the right path of a career.
