Melaia Anna – Gift Bag Analysis

I decided to do gift bag for non- profit organization Charity: Water. Charity: water is organization that provides clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The organization has helped fund 13,641 projects, benefiting over 4.6 million people.

My concept was to create charity bag that will show the devastating statistic of how many children suffering from the need of clean water. I wanted to make the bag unique, distinctive and personal.

Both sides of the gift bag have the same statistic but with different numbers: one side says “every 60 second one child dies from water related diseases” and the other side says that “ 4,500 kids will die today from water related diseases”. On both sides of the bag, I have logo that created for this organization. It says water charity, and instead of A in word water I did white water drop. I think this makes the logo memorable and eye-catching.

On the bottom of a bag it says: WATER IS LIFE and shows the statistic that nearly every 5th child is affected by water problem.

For this project I used only one typeface Gill Sans, but I play with weight and color of typeface to make it more eye-catching and put accent on a words that I needed to be more distinguished. I tried to stay simple even though I used 4-color model for this bag, my bag doesn’t have many different colors in it.

With my design of this gift bag I wanted to send message to people who will buy it, that YOU can help people and children in need of clear water.

From this project, I learned that when you designing a gift bag, something so complex and interesting, you need to take into consideration many factors. You should have visual of the whole bag as one piece and make it work. It’s good to print out and put together as many test bags as possible, because it will show you what you need to be changed.

Design Approach:

With this project my biggest problem was to make sketch, and figure out what will be in it (what pictures, information, quotes..) Because it is a complex project and you have to figure out how each side of the brochure will work separately and together with all other sides, it was challenging but interesting for me. I learn that you should experiment as much as you can to find the right solution in design for your brochure.

We also were limited in colors that we could use, this actually helped more then challenged me. Because when you work with the same colors it’s easier to make brochure work as a whole piece.

The typeface that I used for this project:

1. Copperplate Gothic Light – serif type

2. Helvetica Neue – san serif type

Paper:

I didn’t choose my final paper yet, but I thought about:

MOHAWK Manufactor paper – Sort White Felweave;

texture – uncoated

weight – 110c / 298 gsm

or

MAHWAK solution Linen Natural

80 cover / 216 gsm

Postcard analysis – Anna Melaia

I think it was very helpful that we did sketch our ideas before start working InDesign. This helped me to see more vividly how can I play with negative space and what variations I should do.

For one color – Grayscale postcard I used colors that will better show idea or message of postcard. My postcard is about Love, so I tried to use warm colors to show it.

Duo-tone design – I changed position of the card on vertical and again tried to show different emotions with different colors.

CMYK: 4-color design was the hardest for me, because I like when it’s only one or colors on image. I feel that you can show what you want to say better with accent on one color. When you have so many variations of different colors sometimes you loose the idea of design.

Through out all postcards I used the same typeface – Baskerville.

During this assignment I learn important skills that will help me in future do better design. I learn to change colors, make picture grayskale and duetone.
