When I have time, I go to a café with a big window that I can see a street and I always think about design of houses, cars and so on to drink a cup of coffee. This is my favorite time. Basically, I like think about design of everything. Sometimes, I am frustrated that I cannot actually create my design. So this 3D printing would give me a big opportunity to create a real thing that I imaged. Moreover, I could sell my products that I imaged to people all over the world through internet. It might be easy for people to become an entrepreneur from our homes.
Additionally, we would not need to outsource the parts from abroad. So we could protect domestic people who want a job to decrease the unemployment rate and could protect the intellectual property. Therefore, we could rethink globalization and redevelop our own culture?!

The speaker of this Ted Talk, Lisa Harouni, talks about using 3D printers to print out spare parts. I think this is a great idea which can reduce the amount of money spent on trying to fix products, when we can do it ourselves from home. 3D printers open up creative opportunities in which we can make our own products, rather than trying to search and find it. These printers can assist those who wish to be entrepreneurs. As stated previously, they can create their own product, this can be done quickly and in large masses. For entrepreneurs, this can take out the price it would cost to pay a middle man to create their product.

One of the greatest impacts of developed three dimensional printing that Lisa Harouni describes is its ability to shift the economy – globally and locally. As Harouni states in the talk, manufacturing could be revolutionized by three dimensional printing technology. Since this technology could create whole, intricate products, human workers may no longer be needed once three dimensional printers are in place. The implications of this is it could affect our economy because many workers would lose their jobs, which could impact the rest of the consumer world. Harouni also mentioned that specialized parts such as engines that we rely on other countries (such as China) to produce for us could be made domestically with the help of three dimensional printers. The results of reduced foreign trade may strain the political and economic relations among countries.

However, three dimensional printing is ingenious for individual nations and consumers. Countries can be more self-sustainable without relying heavily on others, and consumers have higher purchasing power due to a broad array of product options and customization that three dimensional technology can offer. Three dimensional printing will dramatically change how the current world works, and like all other innovative technologies, we must find a way to use this in which it could benefit entire communities.

Though 3D printing may pave the way for a new age of consumerism and an unforeseen amount of man-made goods, I believe a cultural shift away from consumerism is a possibility as well. As 3D printing and its related software become increasingly accessible, the way people think about products may fundamentally change. If customizing products and becoming part of the production process becomes easier and easier, consumer involvement in the creation of products may become the norm or even standard. Consumers may feel more attached to the product they just helped create and be less inclined to buy something new to replace it. Consumers may come to see themselves not just as passive buyers of wares but designers, artists and creators of works of art.

The TED Talk on 3D Printing touches on the possible innovations that can arise from the invention, the advancements in manufacturing and possible changes to our everyday lives. However, although it is revolutionary, the video suggests that it will eventually abolish the need for manual labor. That would mean fewer jobs for people abroad, where we would normally outsource, but more jobs for domestic workers. That seems to be a price to pay for customized production on demand, that can possibly better America’s economy. In addition, 3D printing has the capabilities of aid in better health due to MRI implants. All of which are making advancements that generations to come will enjoy.

With that being said, the entrepreneurial benefits from 3D Printing are immense. There are so many niches and target markets that this invention can benefit. Not only does it transcend barriers, but it will continue to advance and be betterment to the world.

The idea of 3-D printing has been around for as long as thirty years but many people were not accessible to this technology due to the lack of knowledge and advancement as mentioned by Lisa Harouni in the video. Since then it has become accessible at home and one could ever purchase a machine at home for just three hundred dollars. But the most intriguing scenario for this technology isn’t in the manufacture of objects we see every day—that will only be a small niche in the 3D-printing industry. Instead, 3D printing will realize its full potential when it enables people to innovate and create all new objects and devices in a one-touch process.
Its open doors for a lot of innovators who are taking the chance to create something new for the community. With that said, I know it will help me create the type of music instrument that I want or even the type of shoes or car that I desire. It just opens up possibilities for me to use my imagination to create an item that I want. It will definitely contribute to my community as well because I can just create items that others can purchase and also start up a business for myself. This technology will become popular in the upcoming era.

Throughout Lisa Harouni talk I learn of different ways in which 3D printing can be used for like; customization, prototypes, prosthetics or implant and even items that had been discontinued.
Something that grab my attention is customization, how you want your product to look. I believe that 3D printers give options on creating anything according to the person’s needs and how they want them to be done. It gives the consumers the control over their product for example with entrepreneurs, 3D printing gives a chance of creation a prototype for their business. They can customize these products till they get what they believe is the best for the item they want to sale.
Another possibility that I believe is incredible are creating prosthetics. There is a veterans retirement home around where I live and I find it very useful that they can create a prosthetic arm or leg or whatever the person needs that would be comfortable for the person. A lot of the veterans always complain about how it hurts or bothers them but with the 3D printing use I think it would make it easier for people to have more confidence.

After i watch this video, i see that 3D printing can goes everywhere in our world. For example, people can use the 3D printer print the lung and bones. We also can use the 3D printing on both micro and macro ways. In the video, Lisa Harouni shows us the tiny components which was created by the 3d technology. Also, we see the 3 meters huge building created by the 3D technology. In the recent 30 years, 3d technology grows fast and occur more and more often in our everyday life. For example, today’s ping pong balls are created by the machine with 3d technology. In the future, we may find out that everything in our life are creating with the 3d technology.

The fast pace growth of popularity of 3d printing is something that I am excited to see the outcome of. However, if this kind of advanced technology existed around thirty years ago, I wonder what new technology will be emerging in the next thirty years. A show I was watching on HGTV, “Tiny House, Big Living” used 3d printing software to create the miniature replica of the custom tiny home that they intended on building and living in. One thing that does make me nervous though, will be the quality of the products that are created with 3d printing software. If eventually houses and cars will be created with 3d printing, we need to find a way that it will be more durable and sturdy than the houses and cars that we have now.

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has become more attainable over the course of 30 years. I believe every technological advancement is accompanied by great benefits and great dangers. It’s obvious that this technology will revolutionize the manufacturing world. As exemplified in the video, 3D printers could make it possible to print anything our hearts desired—only limited by our own imagination, our design capabilities, and safety issues. If we can’t find the perfect product at the store, we could go online, download the data, have it personalized, and 3D print it. It could decrease the carbon footprint due to it no longer being necessary to deliver products or drive to obtain products, as well as less outsourcing. It would make factories more efficient and less reliant on multiple machines to manufacture products. I have relatives who are missing limbs or teeth, and I believe this technology would be able to print them a new prosthetic or a new smile. However, I believe the power to create objects so easily is very dangerous, especially when given to the common man. Every piece of great technology will always have a group of people ready and waiting to exploit it in some form, and I feel that is something that should be prepared for as this technology becomes increasingly accessible by the public.

The video explaining the rise, application, and future of 3D printing has far reaching implications for me and the communities that I am a part of. The first thing that comes to mind is the range of choices that are available for items to be printed, the option of customizing an item will become something that is mandatory for the companies producing these cad files. Having these items made to specifically help a single person instead of a generic one size fits all will be a massive selling point for people. People that have specific problems like a handicap will choose the solution that is made specifically for them rather then the average person. What I am most excited for is being able to 3D print out objects that will help with my mobility and strength training. Also I look forward to having the 3D technology penetrating into the snowboarding community. Safety equipment like helmets and back braces can be made to better fit the rider. Custom built drones to record trips remotely in the air and maybe even the possibility of printing out snowboards to ride.

The video and more specifically the speaker, Lisa Harouni (love her accent) suggests a world of possibilities for the communities that I am a part of. First let’s start with Baruch College because it is the community that has given me the opportunity to take this class.

The world of school supplies will be revolutionized by additive manufacturing. Cheaper, more readily available, and more intricately designed (cooler-looking) pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, etc. It would ultimately lower the financial burden for the average college student. Baruch’s BCTC staff could also utilize the technology to update the school’s infrastructure and facilities; ergo, lowering its operating costs and carbon footprint.

Another community that I am a part of is the DJ circuit. A community that is commonly referred to as an “expensive hobby,” but in reality is a booming industry with high demand for top of the line equipment. Additive manufacturing would lower the costs of this equipment (the industry standard Pioneer mixer and CDJs run for around $7,000+). It would also open the door to limitless customization options for the knob turners who want a DJing platform that caters to them, just like how their unique taste in music caters to us.
