Baruch College Advising Alliance

About Us

The Advising Alliance (AA) is a collaborative group of higher education professionals at Baruch College comprised of representatives from departments that provide direct service to our students. It is a mutual network of support for staff who work to help our students succeed academically, personally and professionally.

History of the Advising Alliance

The origins of the Advising Alliance go back to meetings that took place several years ago between the staff at the Undergraduate Advisement and Orientation Office (formerly the Office of Academic Advisement) and the Honors Program Office. The staff in both departments met to discuss topics related to advisement and support for our students. Quickly the group realized that the topics being discussed related to other departments and divisions throughout Baruch. Eventually, the meetings attracted staff members from other departments including SEEK, Orientation, the Starr Career Development Center, Counseling, as well as other departments that provide direct service to students.

In the 2010-2011 academic year we had several staff members attending our gatherings who recognized the value of consistent meetings to discuss topics we were all interested in addressing. It is difficult to pin-point the exact date of the founding of the Advising Alliance but we began identifying the group as such (thanks to the suggestion made by former academic advisor Sarah Wagner for an official name!) in early 2011. One of our first events as the AA was ‘Negotiating Parental Expectations and Pressure’ during the spring 2011 semester. Ever since then, the AA has thrived and grown to gain recognition throughout the Baruch College community!
