December 2018 Meeting

Colleagues,

This is a friendly reminder that our last meeting of the semester is next week, Tuesday, December 18th, 11am in the Starr Conference Room (NVC 2-190).

Also, our agenda will be as follows:

  • Introductions and Announcements
  • AA Updates!
  • Potluck!
  • Debrief of fall 2018 and planning for spring 2019
  • Have fun!

Finally, we have some exciting updates about the AA:

  • Our Website is growing! Please check it out (and notice we’ve added the site to our banner below. Spread the word!).
  • Speaking of the Website, please join your co-chairs in welcoming two members who have graciously agreed to head our new Website Communications Committee—Marny Smith from MSPIA and Sandra Kupprat from Starr! They will be assisting us in the upkeep and general maintenance of the site.
  • And now that we’re evolving, you’ll notice this email is coming from a newly created email: AdvisingAlliance@baruch.cuny.edu. Please use this email to communicate with us and to request announcements to go out on the list, which you’ll notice is an official “members listserv” now.

Ok, that’s it for updates. See you all on Tuesday!

Student Retention, Momentum, and Graduation

Many thanks to Mary Gorman, Vice President for Enrollment Management & Strategic Academic Initiatives, for sharing Baruch College’s current state of “Retention, Academic Momentum, and Graduation” at our November 2018 meeting.

Below is the slide deck as well as a handout on what staff and faculty can do to help students finish in four years.

Setting Healthy Boundaries when Working with Students

Colleagues,

We had a great workshop this past Tuesday (Oct. 9th)! Big shout out to Dr. Jael Amador, Student Psychological Counselor at Baruch’s Counseling Center, and Douglas Medina, Advising Alliance co-chair, for facilitating the workshop.

For those who were not able to attend click here for the presentation slides.

Addressing Consent and Sexual Harassment

In light of the recent supreme court justice hearings and #MeToo movement, below are some resources I thought were important to share.

Instituting a Collaborative Approach to Addressing the Growing Mental Health Crisis in Higher Education

Two of your co-chairs have published an article in Times Higher Education. Check out the original post here (registration is free). And click here for the longer version of the piece.

Special thanks to Dr. Susan Locke and Dr. Teresa Hurst from Baruch College and Dr. Tara West from the CUNY School of Professional Studies for their valuable input on an early version of the article!

Feel free to comment!

Welcome to the Baruch College Advising Alliance website!

The Advising Alliance is a collaborative group of higher education professionals at Baruch College comprised of representatives from departments that provide direct service to our students. It is a mutual network of support for staff who work to help our students succeed academically, personally and professionally.

We would like this site to be an active space for us to start and continue conversations that arise out of our monthly meetings, as well as a space to document and archive the institutional history of the Advising Alliance.
