Week 5 Update
This week, I concentrated on getting a more concrete structure around my ideas. After last week’s meeting and a few ideas I heard, it really helped nailing down how my artist collective was going to function.
I landed on this: a members-run database of artists and makers across the globe. Once an artist’s portfolio is approved, they are given access to the profiles of other “Seekers”. Within the internal Seek world, members can request and offer their services as a trade – no monetary exchanges happen. Twice a year, every member is paired with someone else in the collective and given an assignment that they must complete together. The actual work flow of those assignments are depending on the matter involved – if they complete separate parts and then combine, or if the entire process is collaborative. When the assignment is due, Seek hosts “meet-ups”, wherein the artists are invited to come and showcase the work that they’ve done. They might even meet each other in person for the first time. The content of these assignments is still being worked out in my mind – I’d like to incorporate some sort of charitable support, but I’m not quite sure yet how that can work.
The above is all digital, through the Seek website. The print publication, which will come out bi-annually (timed with the assignment due dates), is a showcase of the projects coming out of Seek. The artists themselves will be featured alongside their completed assignments. This print form will be sent to various agencies and tastemakers in the creative worlds as a form of promotion for the artists and Seek itself.
In terms of deliverables, I drew up thumbnails for all the pieces of the website (attached). I also have been re-teaching myself Photoshop and researching the best practices for designing a website without coding it directly onto the server. I found the 960 grid as a standard practice and have been orientating myself to use that. Next week I hope to have the websites actually designed, as well as the first assignment drafted.
