Rutgers Updates Its Anthem to Include Women- Rosie Mosseri
In the 1900’s many colleges in America had only admitted men to attend their schools. Because women had not been allowed to attend these schools, many of their alma maters and anthems had been directed towards men only. A few examples of colleges that had complied by these rules are Rutgers, Davidson College and West Point. Once woman had been granted access to attend these colleges they began to take up higher and higher percentages of the schools. This lead up to a point that these male-oriented anthems were offensive. If women dominate nearly half of these schools why shouldn’t the school’s anthems represent them too? The women of these schools had taken a stand and got schools like Rutgers to change the lyrics of their original anthems, thereby directing them towards women too.
