The Community Service Project has made my expectations of my life in three years even more uncertain than it already was; in preparing my group’s presentation and viewing the presentations of other groups, I discover more and more intriguing organizations and activities to consider participating in. During my high school years, I’ve only volunteered in hospitals and soup kitchens, which I find to be rather typical. Though I’ve heard a lot about other types of volunteering organizations, such as programs to assist less-privileged young kids, the Bill Clinton Foundation, and so on, I have never seen myself with the ability and opportunity to possibly contribute to them. However, seeing the Community Service Proposals that my group and other groups came up with, the possibility of expanding my range of volunteering experiences arises. Along with this comes the uncertainty; will I have enough free time to try these organizations? Will I be able to manage my time well enough in the future? For now, though, I’d like to focus on the organization my group chose and hopefully, it goes well. Especially when so much has changed in life in the past three months, a clear vision of how my life would be in the next three years is difficult to form. Nevertheless, I hope that I’ll still have the enthusiasm to contribute my time and knowledge to my community in some way, the drive to improve myself as a person and a student, and the motivation to continue and invest the best of my ability in whatever I’m doing.

Journal 2: What does it mean to serve your community?
As someone who is blessed with the opportunity of having the basic necessities of living, as well as the chance to have higher education, I think my role in the Baruch and broader community is to dedicate some portion of my knowledge or time in helping a cause that I believe will strengthen or improve the community. While I’m not quite sure where or what that cause may be, I think eventually I will be able to contribute. Volunteering my time will also allow me to foster more experiences in the community around me and in New York City. During high school, some of my most interesting experiences came with volunteering and some involvement in the school community. I hope that such an outcome will be similar in college.
The Honors Program promotes the culture of service in this way as well; by volunteering, students are able to see that their skills and contributions are worthwhile. They are also able to experience interactions with many different groups of people. Now that we are considered “adults,” we have a lot more responsibility. By encouraging students to volunteer, the Honors Program recognizes the valuable work experiences we may encounter while volunteering.
Journal 1: Where Have You Been and Where Are You Going?
Hello; my name is Karen. I’ve lived in the same house in the same neighborhood in New York City for all eighteen years of my life so far. While this is quite a lengthy span of time, I haven’t ventured much outside of Queens, which I hope will change a little bit in college. Because of the lack of adventuring I did outside as a kid, I believe I’m afraid of a lot more things than the optimal amount: menacingly sharp objects, bugs that have too many legs and are able to fly, shady alleyways at nighttime. (Note: that was definitely not an exhaustive list.) Though I’m sure some of these fears will never disappear, I guess I hope to somewhat alleviate the anxiety that they cause as I grow older and, hopefully, more mature. While I attend Baruch, I’d also like to improve on my participation, something I’ve always struggled with throughout my academic career, possibly join a club or two, and of course maintain the designated GPA. I think I’ll also have to be more cautious of my time management, since I now have a long commute between home and school. As of now, I feel that I still have to adjust to the demands of life at Baruch, but I think I’ll manage…
