Next Steps….

Our group is doing the Green City Challenge which would show people the effects of sustainability and fun and innovative ways to “Go Green”. With this idea we approached the Eco Club who supported our idea and have teamed up with us to promote “Going Green” on Earth Day, the best day to promote sustainability and advocate for a healthier environment. While consulting with the eco club we were able to reserve a date, a room, establish the kind of activities we could pursue, and most of all get a notable club to help spread the word on “Going Green”. My involvement in the community service project has educated me on the problems the environment is going through and the advancements we as individuals can make so that the environment is fully functional.

Personally, I have joined Finance and Economic Society (FES) where I am able to advance my interests in Finance and learn aspects from generating a proper resume to the technical analysis that goes along with a stock pitch. Overall I was able to generate a larger network, become more professional, narrowing the exact profession I would like to pursue, and have an enjoyable experience that I could expect in the future.

This team project has made me more responsible and team-oriented. Working in a team we all had responsibilities to fulfill and gave me a sense of accountability to produce for the group and not let anybody down. Also working in a team its good to be relaxed and communicate effectively to develop some team chemistry and tackle assignments effectively. In the future I will be working in numerous team projects so it would be good to have that sense of responsibility so I can approach team projects with a similar mindset.

Hopefully in the next 3 years I am a healthy young male looking forward to graduating college on a high note and start looking for a career that could make a difference as well as an occupation that I could enjoy for the entirety of my life.

Journal #3: Next Steps…

Through the community service project, we got to learn about many of the resources at Baruch that are available for us to take advantage of. For one, there is the library session that we did during one of our freshmen seminar classes that introduced us to idealist, which is where we found the organization we wanted to work with. In addition, we were also introduced to the library’s enormous data base. This project gave me the chance to look into donating more than money back to aid the society but also my time and effort. Without the project, I can’t really say I would have allotted time to volunteer. I am grateful that it has reminded me of how fortunate I am, and pushes us to give back to our communities.

I can not believe my first semester at college is almost over; I don’t even know where all my time went. Throughout the semester, I saw myself improve a lot on my time management. I felt like everything I have dedicated my time to was worth my while and I know will not regret any of it. The coming years, I hope to continue to take advantage of all that Baruch College and the Scholars Program offers me. In three years, I hope to be very involved in school as well as outside of school. I would like to have joined many different organizations and taken many steps in my career. I hope I would have found the right path for me in terms of my profession. And most of all, I hope to be in this Scholars program with every single one of my classmates and watch everyone excels together.

One of the reasons Baruch is a great school is that it has a multitude of services to help students achieve their goals. Baruch has services to help students succeed academically (SACC and the Writing Center),socially(clubs and teams), and professionally (Starr). As a first semester freshman, I have found all of the options exciting and slightly overwhelming. I have utilized many of these services and will continue to do so in the upcoming semester.

The Community Service Project is going to be an eye-opener to me, as one of my team members has found a creative and challenging project for my group. He was able to find out about a small non-for-profit, The Green City Challenge, through one of the sites we were directed to during our freshmen seminar meeting with one of the school’s librarians.
The Green City Challenge’s mission is to raise awareness, in NYC, about our biological footprint. My group is collaborating with the environmental awareness club to host an event on Earth Day. We will use games from The Green City Challenge to engage fellow students in the dialogue about how we can lead more sustainable lifestyles.

I have never hosted an event and this project will give me insight into various aspects create a successful event. Through using the resources presented to us (the visit with the librarian), my group has found a project that will give back to our school, foster our leadership skills and help us become conscientious of the impact of our lifestyles on the environment.

The involvement in the Community Service Project encouraged me to draw on faculty and staff for more information. I have used the SACC center in my time at Baruch for assistance in my speech preparations. It is very nice to have such a center available for assistance for many different classes. Centers like this are extremely helpful throughout my Baruch career because they will help me along the way, even if I may not be encountering a problem with a class this semester, it is very possible that I will use these services in the future. It is indeed very helpful to have learned about such things sooner rather than later. The writing center seems like it will be of great importance to my future at Baruch as it could truly give me an edge for the many writing assignments that are sure to come my way throughout my time here. Also it seems likely I may return to the SACC center for math help as well. Clearly these centers have a great amount of uses and I know that they are definitely a resource I will be revisiting in the future. My view of community service has evolved to give me more of a very personal connection with the community service. I say this because, especially with the program I will be volunteering with, it is about developing a personal connection with the kids that I interact with. This is a major difference from a possible work of charity more focused on a concrete item. The community service I am doing is about creating a lasting experience for a child. Well quite frankly, I am unsure of where I see myself in the next 3 years. It is a long way off and I know a lot will change from now to then, but I guess by those words, I see that I will have changed, matured and will hopefully be much more sure of what I will do. For now, I have to work with what I have.
