New York City Plans To Change Legal Age To Buy Tobacco.

As of now, the legal age to buy tobacco products in New York City is 18, but the government is trying to change that. They are trying to make the age 21, but it will not stop people who are under 21 from having or smoking tobacco. The reason they are trying to make this change is because at age 20, many people start to make the transition from experimental smoking to becoming every day smokers. Their goal is to stop young people from making the choice to start smoking for their whole lives. Many believe that this is just a waste of time because people younger than the legal age will still be able to obtain tobacco products in one way or another. According to studies from England, changing the legal age would decrease the percent of young smokers greatly. New York officials having estimated raising the age to 21 will decrease the percent of smokers from 20-18 to 55 percent.
