MKT 3600 Communications Module

The Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute has partnered with your course, MKT 3600/Marketing Information for Decision Making, to run a two-part communications-skills module: an opportunity to practice communicating about your course content while building skills that will carry you through your major and beyond.

Step 1: Watch the Video Module

Early in the semester, you will watch the short video “Strategic Slide Design for Market Research.” The video will guide you through a series of learning activities.

What will I need to complete the video module?
  • Handout 1: Starbucks Visitor Frequency

Step 2: Create a Practice Slide

At the end of the video, you’ll be prompted to complete the following task:

Using the graph representing the “Starbucks visitor frequency” data set (Handout 1), examine the data and design a slide that effectively conveys your key takeaways from this information, following the video’s guidelines for effective slide design.

  • Your slide will be essential to the practice session that follows.

Step 3: Attend a Practice Session

Following the video module, every student in MKT 3600 will participate in a 1-hour small-group practice session with a Communication Fellow at the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute. Our Fellows are academic professionals with specialized expertise in teaching (and using!) communication skills. In the session, you’ll use the slide you created to develop your oral communication skills in preparation for your Marketing 3600 presentations.

How do I schedule my practice session?

Appointments are made on our online scheduler: https://baruchcollege.mywconline.net/ (choose MKT 3600 from the menu). In SP25, practice sessions will take place between February 18 and March 16. When making an appointment, note that sessions are labeled “in-person” or “online;” please sign up for a session that matches the modality of your upcoming group presentation for MKT 3600.

  • Sessions can hold up to 5 students each, but each student must sign up individually. For the best selection, book your session as soon as possible.
Where will the practice sessions take place?

In-Person: Sessions are at the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute: 137 E. 25th Street (to the left of the library building), third floor. When you arrive, please turn right to find the Schwartz Communication Institute and wait for your Fellow in the waiting area down the hall near the printer. Your Communication Fellow will find you when your session is scheduled to begin.

Online: You will access your Zoom session via the online scheduler at https://baruchcollege.mywconline.net/. Log back in approximately five to ten minutes before the start of your appointment. Then, open your appointment and click “Start or Join Online Consultation.” If your assigned Communication Fellow requires a passcode to join, you will find it in your confirmation email. Please note that we ask that you turn on your camera so that you can participate fully in your practice session.

What happens in a practice session?

Your Communication Fellow will guide you through a series of learning activities to reflect on slide design, review best practices for presenting a slide, and practice oral presentation skills.

  • Bring the slide you created for a successful session.
Any fine print?
  • Arrive on time. All consultations are scheduled for 60 minutes. If you’re not present 15 minutes into your scheduled time, you can lose your slot.
  • Cancel your appointment if you can’t make it. You may cancel your session with 24 hours notice by using the online scheduler. This ensures other students can take your place.
