Summer 2025 Workshops

The Schwartz Communication Institute and Marxe Graduate Advisement invite all capstone students in the MPA, MIA, and MSEd-HEA programs to attend our virtual writing workshops this summer.

Space is limited and will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Please reach out to Melina Moore, the Assistant Director for Writing in Public and International Affairs ([email protected]), with any questions.

Academic Reading Strategies, taught by Eva Gordon Ryali

This workshop provides students with fundamental strategies for graduate-level reading. Participants will learn advanced techniques and methods for reading strategically, including pre-reading and active reading approaches that enhance comprehension and retention. Additionally, the workshop guides students in cultivating optimal reading habits and environments.

Engaging with Sources, taught by Femi Lewis

This workshop introduces students to key strategies for working with sources on the graduate level, with a focus on the research paper. Participants will examine ways of incorporating sources strategically into their writing-distinguishing between argument, background, and evidence-and review examples of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing source material.

Understanding the Literature Review (Capstone), taught by Dr. Charlie Rowe

This workshop introduces students to the literature review as a common component of research projects, such as the capstone paper. Participants will examine key rhetorical moves of the literature review in action and learn strategies for organizing and synthesizing their research to meet audience expectations.

Editing Strategies for Clarity, Style, and Professionalism

The Schwartz Communication Institute and Marxe Graduate Advisement invite all students in the MPA, EMPA, MIA, and MSEd-HEA programs to attend our Editing Strategies for Clarity, Style, and Professionalism writing workshop series this semester. Participants will learn strategies for editing their writing at the sentence level for clarity, style, and professionalism.
