The Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute has partnered with your course, MKT 5750/Marketing Strategy, to run a three-step communications-skills module: an opportunity to practice developing and communicating arguments about your course content while building skills that will carry you through your major and beyond.
Step 1: Watch the Video
Early in the semester, you will watch the short video “Building a Persuasive Marketing Argument.” The video will guide you through a series of learning activities.
What do I need to complete the video module?
- Handout 1: Building a Persuasive Marketing Strategy Argument (graphic organizer)
- Handout 2: Chateau de Birazel case
Step 2: Draft an Email
At the end of the video, you’ll be prompted to complete the following task:
After analyzing the Chateau de Birazel case (Handout 2) using the step-by-step graphic organizer on Handout 1, you’ll communicate your strategy recommendation in a short, clear email:
Imagine you’ve been hired by Paul Boeckx as a marketing consultant. You’ve thoroughly analyzed the options and are ready to send him an email that includes your recommendation and outlines your supporting argument. Be sure to follow the guidelines for an effective business email introduced in the video.
What should I know about drafting the email?
- Your email will be essential to the practice session that follows.
Step 3: Attend a Practice Session
Following the video module, every student in MKT 5750 will participate in a 1-hour small-group practice session with a Communication Fellow at the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute. Our Fellows are academic professionals with specialized expertise in teaching (and using!) communication skills. In the session, you’ll reflect on your drafted email and practice further developing your argument—and responding to challenges from other perspectives—in conversation with your peers.
How do I schedule my practice session?
Appointments are made on our online scheduler: https://baruchcollege.mywconline.net/ (choose MKT 5750 from the menu). In SP25, sessions will take place between February 18 and March 21. When making an appointment, note that sessions are labeled “in-person” or “online.”
- Sessions can hold up to 4 students each, and each student signs up individually. For the best selection, book your practice session as soon as possible.
Where will the sessions take place?
In-Person: Sessions are at the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute: 137 E. 25th Street (to the left of the library building), third floor. When you arrive, please turn right to find the Schwartz Communication Institute and wait for your Fellow in the waiting area down the hall near the printer. Your Communication Fellow will find you when your session is scheduled to begin.
Online: You will access your Zoom session via the online scheduler at https://baruchcollege.mywconline.net/. Log back in approximately five to ten minutes before the start of your appointment. Then, open your appointment and click “Start or Join Online Consultation.” If your assigned Communication Fellow requires a passcode to join, you will find it in your confirmation email. Please note that we ask that you turn on your camera so that you can participate fully in your practice session.
What happens in a practice session?
Your Communication Fellow will guide you through a series of learning activities to reflect on your drafted email, explore challenges to the arguments you and others have built, and build on this to further strengthen your strategy proposals.
- Bring the email you drafted for a successful session.
Any fine print?
- Arrive on time. All consultations are scheduled for 60 minutes. If you’re not present 15 minutes into your scheduled time, you can lose your slot.
- Cancel your appointment if you can’t make it. You may cancel your session with 24 hours notice by using the online scheduler. This ensures other students can take your place.
