Tut’s Cane

For my design, I created a cane thinking of my parents. My parents both had back injuries from accidents at their jobs and now struggle to move around without a cane. When thinking of my design, I empathized with my parents who can’t do simple tasks they used to do like bend down to pick up things, trouble stabilizing themselves, holding on while riding public transport. I looked through existing solutions, and had no luck in finding any product that can relieve these pains. That’s I focused on creating a product that was convenient, given that my parents use the cane every day.

My design improves the original cane while not deviating from its original purpose. Beyond that, it solves other issues that many disabled people have such as picking things up and holding on. While also considering, the thoughts of my user (parents) who don’t want to carry more stuff and want to be able to do the things themselves.

This design has various attachments and gadgets. The Lock located in the middle part of the cane allows the user to lock into various supports and carry items. For example, if my parents were riding the train, they can better stabilizer by locking their cane to the subway pole. This technology uses strong and secured technology similar to handcuff engineering to ensure a firm grip that is adapted to the surface.

It also has a reacher, that can pick up or reach and grab any object. This feature is located at the bottom of the cane and combined with the height adjustment of the cane there’s no obstacle in getting any object.

The name Tut’s cane comes from the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun who was disabled and used a cane. He’s one of the most well-known pharaohs for his wealth, depicted by all the treasures found in his almost intact tomb in 1922.

  1. My favorite part of this is the lock function. At my job all day I see patients trying to balance their canes on numerous objects and having them fall anyways. Having that feature would be a game changer!

  2. Hey Omar,
I think your product is very thoughtful and something that can be made in real life. I think that a lot of people can benefit from a product like this. Also really like the details of the features. This product showed your effort and creativity.
