Library Research

There was a request to re-post this on the course website. Here it is….

For many of the assignments for this class, you will need to do library research. Here are some research databases available through our library’s site that would be useful for us:

The direct links above may not always work as you need to access these from on-campus or login through our library’s site if you are accessing them off-campus.

Here are journals/magazines that are good sources:

  • Communications of the ACM
  • IEEE IT Professional
  • IEEE Software
  • IEEE Computer
  • Harvard Business Review
  • Sloan Management Review
  • California Management Review
  • MIS Quarterly Executive
  • Other CIS journals (please see a list of journals that are ranked based on their quality)

Importance of communication and how Baruch can help

I have been emphasizing the importance of communication (both oral and written) in how you perform in the job market. We had a visitor from the writing center earlier in the semester to tell you about how they can help in improving your writing skills. Here is one more service that is valuable –

Tools for Clear Speech is a set of tutorial services for ELL and nonnative English speakers at Baruch College. Our primary mission is to guide students toward more effective communication skills by helping to improve pronunciation, speech clarity, intelligibility, and socio-pragmatic abilities.

TfCS offers a variety of services including one-to-one clear speech tutorials, innovative pronunciation workshops, small conversation hours, an innovative Oral Communication Video Assessment, and interactive software in the TfCS Speech Lab.

All services are absolutely free, and regular participation can greatly improve students’ communication skills. Please visit TfCS for more information!

Kindles

I forgot to mention today in class about the kindles that we are making available for you. Hope you checked my previous post on kindles.

Clicker

ClickerPlease remember to get a clicker for yourself. You should be able to keep and use the clicker throughout the semester. I will start adding grades for the clicker quizzes starting next Friday. You can borrow your clicker from the library’s circulation desk.

Kindles

Through an arrangement with our library, I have made available a limited number of kindle e-readers. If you would like to borrow one and use it for the semester, you could do so from the library circulation desk. Please note that the textbooks that you need for the course is available free of cost through our library’s subscription to ebrary. However, if you would like to load a copy of the books on a tablet or e-reader (if you already own one or if you borrow a kindle from the library), you will need to purchase a digital copy yourself.

Course blog

I have added you all to the course blog. You can use your Baruch username and password to login. You can call BCTC helpdesk at (646) 312 1010 if you have trouble logging in.
