I got lucky with choosing my statement

For this paper i wasn’t sure if I wanted to go along with the statement I had chosen for the previous assignment, or choose another statement altogether. For this paper i wasn’t sure if I wanted to go along with the statement I had chosen for the previous assignment, or choose another statement altogether. After spending 30 minutes on choosing between 5 different statements and making small outlines about what I can write about, I still had nothing interesting. So I picked a random number, went to that page in the book, selected the first 4 sentences of the passage, and I just stuck with it.

It wasn’t a bad idea at all. The statement was better than the other ones I was thinking about choosing. It made writing the paper easier. The statement regarded the “electric information environment” and how it causes us to become connected with each other. I immediately thought of Facebook and Twitter and the ease of staying in touch and knowing just about everything that is happening, from the weather outside to situations outside of our country.

McLuhan was a “media Nostradamus”. He predicted that mediums (e.g Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr) would be used to know too many things about too many people. And he is correct.

I wrote this paper like I would have any other paper. I make a thesis to work on and continue on that path. I write out my thoughts first as they come, as I think of each point, until I stop. The organizing of these thoughts and ideas happen after its all written so i can structure the paper and essentially my argument. I prefer to really think out what happens from the quote rather than really drawing from the work. So in this particular assignment i wrote of McLuhan’s talk of discoveries. I likened it to evolution and the advancement that he saw stemming from the mixing of ideas like the basis of his book. It really intrigued me when you think about the grand sense of things. Thus i just really talked about grand ideas but spent most of my argument supporting my points with details rather than make a variety of claims i was thinking about. i really focused on proving my points rather than developing my argument. I guess overall it was pretty simple to write since it was mostly in my mind rather than other peoples ideas. I guess i see McLuhan more like how the professor described as a visionary. looking back i kind of overlooked the importance of digital tools and media. I focused on my own ideas rather then those two ideas.

Quote i worked on

Our time is a time for crossing barriers, for erasing
old categories—for probing around. When two
seemingly disparate elements are imaginatively
poised, put in apposition in new and unique ways,
startling discoveries often result.

GOOD Music?

If your a music fan then you should know that Kanye West is releasing a compilation album for his label GOOD Music called “Cruel Summer”. It has been delayed two times from its original August 7th release date to September 18th now. I have never doubted Kanye when it comes to his music except for “808’s and Heartbreak” he was experimenting i didn’t really feel it but when i listened I was pleasantly surprised. So if he is delaying it for a good reason I would understand. However recently a track-list was revealed listing only 12 songs and if you have been following news on the album you know that he has purposely released FIVE songs already which means you would technically have to pay for seven. two delays for 12 songs and 5 of which are already out? This was going to be one of the first Cd’s i bought in a long time just to show my support but if there isn’t more content than just 12 songs its a safe bet this album if going to get downloaded for free a lot

A certain passage or line i found memorable in The Medium is the Massage was the one about your parents or parenting. To the world you didn’t belong to just your mother and father they were not your only influences o sources of morals and beliefs. I think it resonated with me so well because I feel that’s how I was raised my parents divorced when I was young so my father wasn’t around that much. also, when i wanted to address my mother with certain topic i found her old fashioned style of thinking annoying ;no disrespect to her, but what she would tell me and try to teach me just didn’t hold up in the world I was living in, the world i was in when i was by myself or on my own so technological mediums were like a parent, anything i didn’t know i learned how to do myself or from the internet outside of traditional learning in school and i feel that sometimes its better have technology raise you rather than your parents technology is always current, not to mean just do away with parents completely but a hybrid approach is the new and best way of doing things in my opinion.

Glass is half empty or Half filled???

This irony about human nature made me look into this line from The Medium is massage, “The public consists of separate individuals walking around with separate, fixed points of view” (P68).   The image above also illustrates about three separate individual, viewing at same thing but with different aspects. This quote also points out something very interesting “fixed point of views”, which means that humans are so rigid about their opinions and perspective that they don’t even welcome outsider’s thoughts or ideas.

Hello.

Let us stop a minute and talk about how technology has charge the world, e.g. cell phone. Let us see disadvantage and advantage.

Advantage

The cell phone has changed the world. People could text and talk to anybody at any time they want. It also saved lives in case of emergency, such as 911 calls, toll free number and 311 via call phone without going to police station. Wow.  It also saves money for people while traveling around the world. They could call their friends, family or anybody on the phone when they were on the plane.  What about offices too? Cell phone has given lot of opportunity to less developed regions without the needs to run wires to each telephone user.

Disadvantage

Loss of life: Many people have lost their live due to texting and driving on the high way. Some people got carry away while they were on the phone with their relatives and friends. The percentage of people that have lost their life because of the cell phone increase every day until the law enforcement had to put the stop it by putting it into law.

Distraction: Many organizations did not allow cell phone to be used due to distraction from the person making the calls such as Job site, Hospital etc.

Technology:  The high tech cell phone has caused many of our young not to be able to spell very well in class.

Excessive of cell phone user become addicted to it: Cell phone damage brain function due to excessive usage of cell phone. It cause cancer to the brain

This part really stuck out to me because I feel like our education has evolved to the point where we are constantly learning but also constantly teaching. Our surroundings are technologically advanced with everyone having at least one major piece of tech in their pocket; cell phone, tablet, music player, etc. Instead of being attuned to “adult” news, we are generators and commentators in an endless timeline of news. All of us are categorized under “media”.  In my opinion, some of us have become desensitized due to this; the presence of TOO much information to not only take in but also feed back out. We have a constant thirst for attention, whether we want to admit to it or not…

The “Mind Is The Massage” contains many thoughts and one that I think is worthy of examination is that pertaining to the developments due to printed word. Like the book discussed before written words, we as a people used only verbal communication. Our world was that of a community which relied of co-dependence and co-reliance. Introduction of books and literature allowed the gaining of knowledge without people to people interaction creating a self isolated growing process. Hence I feel that this event shaped our current society. The eventual lead to compartmentalization by this invention of written word created a way of division for humans. With the necessity of human interaction lessened the connections between people have grown thinner. The idea of public transfer of knowledge becomes individualistic advancement. Without the need for constant communication, public relations become more burdensome and ultimately less practiced. I feel it’s fair to say that printed word created the possibility for isolationism and that is a path that we see common in this current world. I ponder the question of a world without printed word. Would humans have stronger communal ties? Would strong communal ties mean less arguments or conflicts? Is the world better off with printed words? This idea may be a bit over the top, and I agree, but the possibility exists. In conclusion, I feel that printed word could have  lead to a separation in human relationships, and that maybe without this invention people would be closer to one another, more reliant on one another, and ultimately friendlier with one another.

Hey guys, I’m into politics and would like to open the Pandora’s box… :) Let’s talk about politics, I’ve been living in NYC for about three years, and I consider myself to be a Republican due to the fact that I’m cheap (in the good sense of the word.) I’m very meticulous in what involves spending money that I do not have, which according to what I’ve seen in these four years of President Obama is not going to lead us to any good place in the future. Please feel free to comment on my blog and share your ideas.

The “Medium is the Massage” opens too many questions about the beginning of new social medias through electronic devices and the World Wide Web. Something that struck me from Marshall McLuhan’s book was the way how he predicted that our privacy will be at risk due to the fact that ir will be too much information from us out there through these new electronic social medias. I agree with McLuhan when he states that “Electrical information devices for universal, tyrannical womb-totomb surveillance are causing very serious dilemma between our claim to privacy and the community’s need to know.” As we know, there are many social network sites out there, and I’m really concern of the level of information being shared about my personal life to advertising companies, governments, etc. Have you thought of the level of information in your footprint? I believe that we have a photo identification document on the web that we do not really know about it.

This is an image that appears on page 42 during the reading. What made this so interesting to read was that it has a rather ironical meaning to it. In reality when we look at the rear view mirror we are looking to see who is behind us. But in this case, we are still looking back but in a rather different manner and we are seeing the past. Both aspects urge us to look back but has rather distinct vantage points!

The quote states, ” The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur”. To me the quote is saying that all advancements have helped societies excel without any drawbacks. This is something I don’t really agree with. I think a lot of advancements have held back societies in different aspects. I know that without all of the advancements we’ve had over the years life may be a lot different and maybe even a lot more difficult. Life being more difficult may not be a bad thing. All of the different advancements society has had, has made it easier for us to become lazier. Is this benefiting society, or holding us back?

I think the most interesting part of the book was this comic strip. It was written in 1968, and is as relevant today as it was more than forty years ago.

It shows two obviously older gentlemen, probably in the corporate world. They seem to be either heading home or to work. As they walk, they notice a group of young adults.

The group seems to be dressed in the latest fashions and are just standing around. One of the men say, ” The hell of it is those punks pump over fifteen billion dollars into the economy every year.”

Today is a very different story, young adult pump a lot more then fifteen billion dollars yearly. If you count everything from fashion, to entertainment, to automobiles, it is a whole lot more.

And now there’s a different demography that’s been targeted “tweens”, those 10-12 year olds who use their parents disposable income to buy iPods and go to Justin Beiber concerts.

The men could like at today’s youth and say the same exact thing. Youth aren’t good for much except for making money in the fashion and entertainment industries.
