Unlike many places in New York, Dover Street Market is a space that uses art functional purpose. As one looks through the collections inhabiting on the concrete floors, there is depth in every area, as wooden racks replace the cold department store racks that most are familiar with. The colors of the fabric contrast with the vibrant colors of the interior and the white walls.
The Market is a refreshing environment from the generic shops that lines the streets of 5th avenue. The interior of the brick buildings on the corner of Lexington and 29th street, reflects more of an adult playhouse than a retail destination. Personality is embedded in every way possible, as the sales associates share their own street style striding across the floors in trendy threads from some of fashion’s biggest names.
Built with the idea that art comes first, the space serves as a practical art exhibition as its audience’s finger through the collections of 1205, Christopher Kane, Le Kilt, Manson Marigela, Rick Owens The Row, and many more. It’s most artistic piece stands as the support for the entire building, as a colorful cylinder covered in patches of fabric, standing as the anchor for the entire building. Currently, the walls are lined with collections from the Spring/Summer Collections of someone of the world’s most creative collections to date. These collections serves as catalyst for the space, as tainted glass lines the walls of the 5th floor. What makes it interesting is that each space is designed with collections in mine.
The Supreme collections reigns on the 7th floor, resembling a skaters dream, as t-shirt collections’, line the walls with classic posters hanging from the walls above. Don’t be fooled by Supremes’ recognition; these are not the pieces you find at your everyday store. These limited collections reflects Supremes individuality in every stitch. Through presentation, exclusivity, and pure eye for design, New York Dover Street Market has bought street wear to a more creative and cohesive place.
“Shopping at Dover Street is more than the unusual aesthetic that known brands predicate their success on. It’s the concept of being in something futuristic, complimenting my shopping experience with the way it should be: vibrant, refreshing and as unique as the clothes, “ says Tafannum Rahman, Baruch sophomore, fashion enthusiast, and stylist. According to Rahman, “The clothes as Dover Street sell themselves. The associates are merely there to ensure that nothing gets stolen, because just being in environment makes you want to purchase hour Comme de Garçon shirts.”
Although the concept behind its interior design is very conceptual, there is a classiness to the idea. By using the clothing and design as a way to highlight fashion, Dover Street brings the edge back to fashion by bring some of the most urban and classy brands, in putting them in one place.
