The Latino Culture Wars

The Puerto Rican Flag

Miss. Gabriela Minueza is a nine year old that went to Albany with her school choir for the 25th anniversary conference of the New York State Association for Bilingual Education. She would sing a solo from the song ”Preciosa,” a patriotic song by the Puerto Rican writer Rafael Hernández. Even though Gabriela is not Puerto Rican she sings a song that tells her pride of being Puerto Rican. This has a lot to do with the fact that Puerto Ricans were the first to come to NYC. The first to open restaurants,  the first to learn English, and the first to fight for their rights. They are the dominate Latino culture and because of this dominance many merge their culture with them. Puerto Ricans have been around and know the lay of the land therefore, other latinos tend to gravitate towards them. Even though Puerto Ricans have a dominant culture, other cultures have not and will not be ignored.  Other cultures have been celebrated and respected causing all cultures to merge and create such a diverse city.
