Life of David Zirk

Week 3

I am convinced that every writer had a moment of struggle when writing a paper. Personally, I always found myself having problems with argumentative papers mainly because the papers were not allowed to be written in first person. At one point in high school, my English teacher assigned an argumentative essay based on cryptocurrency and whether the government should regulate it. It was very difficult for me not to include my thoughts into this paper since I do have a history of dealing with the crypto market. I believe that papers are supposed to be written based on how you feel about a subject however it is a bit difficult when you cannot include your personal thoughts. According to Kate Mckinney Maddalena, they state, “A clear description of your perspective becomes even more important when your stance has to incorporate or respond to someone else’s.” This article also taught me how to properly use first person for example, using “I” when you are asked to summarize and respond or when you are introducing a paper. The author also emphasized that “I” should not be overused. I think this author changed my perspective on how to write papers definitely because they also gave us examples on when to use “I”, vice versa. However, I do have mixed feelings about using “I” because the attached podcast’s go against first person writing. My goal for this week is to go over what other writers have to say in regards to writing in first person.
