First-Year Seminar 2017 – DMB

Carson Vulpis Social Blog Post

Recently, I attended a Baruch Swim meet on November 13th. Baruch was pitted up against York College. I attended because of a need to complete this post, but also because I always enjoyed aquatics and watching them on TV. I never experienced it in person though, and a close friend that knows someone on the team invited me to the event. The atmosphere was electric, with fans cheering as the swimmers entered the room. “To your marks” then the starting gun went off and the crowd roared. The impressive speed of the races kept the event dynamic and compelling. I enjoyed this experience and I believe that watching Baruch sporting events are a great way to become involved in the school and cheer on fellow students. The quality of athletes here is very high and the sports are a great source of entertainment. The meet resulted in Two first places and a second place. I am looking forward to attending more of these events. -Carson Vulpis

MoMA- Carolyn Seminario

I recently attended the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for an art assignment and the FRO blog post. Honestly, I really liked this museum because all the art exhibits were enjoyable and colorful. The museum is about 10-15 minutes from Baruch in Midtown. I did not get lost because it had a huge sign that said “MoMA” that you can spot at least two avenues before. I believe they did that big sign in order to get people to come in and see the art. Also, the outside looked very modern like glass doors and glass windows. To me, things made of glass are considered modern because it is luxurious and would not be used and other decades. When you enter the museum you automatically see art especially huge ones that grab your attention which I think is done on purpose so the person can feel excited for what is in store once they actually go see the exhibits because I was. If you enter through the 53rd Street entrance, the first thing you see is a huge mural like painting on Sol LeWeitt, like color blocking full of colors like red, purple, orange, yellow, green and blue. Each box in the painting was a different color and I stayed there for about 12 minutes trying to understand the bigger picture and bigger message of this painting in each color box. There was six floors in the museums and each floor was with many rooms. The sixth floor was dedicated to an exhibited about if Fashion is considered Modern Art? Although I was not able to see that floor, I hope I get a chance to attend before it closes. Some of the pieces I saw was He Did What He Wanted by Yves Tanguy (picture below), The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, The Birth of The World by Joan Miro, and The Lovers by Rene Magrittee.

On November 9th, at approximately 12:30 PM, I visited the Majors and Minors Fair. Here, there were representatives from the various fields we have within our college, and they spoke to students about their experiences and answered questions. I liked this fair because it was in a comfortable environment, nothing was overwhelming in any aspect. The people were all so friendly, which made it easier for me to speak to them about the various questions I had. Though, others were seemingly much more reluctant to speak with the representatives. I had brought a couple of friends with me to the event! When I questioned their tenseness, I was told that they believed the people at each of the booths were not affable. Therefore, I ensured that I accompanied them to their respective fields and assisted them in their endeavors. There, not only were their questions answered, but I also got a little bit of information every time I went to a different booth. Overall it was an excellent experience. I got to broaden my range of knowledge in the various fields within Baruch College. Although we were only there for around forty-five minutes, it was truly a great time that will come back to support me in the future.

Tyler Magrone Blog post #3

For the career blog post, I looked through various options for an event to attend that would fill my interests, but also meet the goals for the assignment. Lucky for me I didn’t even have to utilize the STARR search career program, because I found an event on a bulletin Board, that Baruch was already having. The event was called the Marketing Career Expo, held on November 16th on the 14th floor of the NVC, and was open for all Baruch students to attend. I figured this event was perfect for me, since my intended major is marketing and I have interest in the field. The meeting overall was rather insightful and informative, filled with students and guest speakers who had experience in the marketing and business field, or were on their way into the field. There was an informative session do outline the paths of marketing and the roads one can take in the work field. A major portion outlined the differences between advertisement and marketing, which was a very educational session, clearing up some gray areas. To sum it up, what I understood is that advertisement is just one main element of marketing, advertising is the component that gets the word out, to the media and public about a product etc., marketing is the greater whole. Aside from the speakers on marketing and advertisement, there was also some advice on choosing majors, how one should decide early on so that they can distinguish goals and know what path they want to take. I completely agree with this concept, but it’s also good to dabble a bit in a lot of majors to see what the perfect fit for you is. Lastly a really cool feature of the event was the networking exercises and information session. At the table I sat at I was given an exercise to network with the people around me and talk about goals, aspirations, backgrounds etc., I enjoyed the exercise because I love interacting and getting to know people. Overall the event was interesting and I definitely came out of it with new knowledge, which is a success in my book.

Blog Post #3- Career

I recently attended a workshop that was hosted by the Starr Career Development Center. The event was called the Marketing Career Expo. Before the event started, everyone took a seat at a table and met other people who were involved in the event. At every table, there was a marketing professional, at least one Baruch alumni who majored in marketing, and other students from other grades. I think that this table setup was a great way to introduce myself and meet others who had experience in the marketing field. When the event started, two guest speakers showed us a visual presentation of the differences and similarities between marketing and advertising. They were saying that it can be difficult to differentiate the two in terms of their definitions. The speakers also talked about the best way to market products to consumers. They claimed that social media has become a very powerful and effective method to market products. They noted that this has become especially true in the past few years. They also showed us charts and graphs that contained reports of which marketing methods did not work very well. After the guest speakers had finished their speeches, the people at each table introduced themselves and their life backgrounds. They spoke of their past education, their educational focus in college and their major. I participated in this conversation. It was interesting because while the majority of the others had already decided on their major, I have not yet determined what I want to focus on. I went to the event because I wanted to see if I was interested in learning more about marketing. I also wanted to see if I should pursue marketing as a career or just dismiss it altogether. I benefitted a great amount from this workshop. I decided that I am not interested in pursuing marketing as a career.

Elyza Craft – Career

For the third Blog Post, I decided to visit the Career Counseling office and schedule a mock interview. I scheduled my interview for the next day to give myself a little time to mentally prepare, although I ended up not really preparing at all. When I arrived, professionally dressed,  the woman interviewing me was very sweet and welcoming, and we introduced ourselves and sat down for my “interview”. She informed me that I would be filmed so that I could watch it back and get feedback. This made me a bit more nervous than I was before because I hate seeing and hearing myself on video. She started by asking me easy, more simple questions to break the ice, but as we got further into the interview the questions began to get more difficult to answer. This kind of thing is especially hard for me because I really do not have much experience in any job, and I also just have a really hard time answering questions about myself under pressure. I can’t think of answers to questions like “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” very easily, so I usually need a lot of time to think. In this case, I had no time to contemplate my answers which stressed me out a little bit, but all while this is happening in my head, I am expected to keep completely calm on the exterior. Also, I am not preparing for a specific interview or anything, so the questions she asked were pretty broad and generic. In conclusion, this interview was more difficult than I expected, but I am glad I scheduled it because now I know how to prepare and what to expect for an interview that is real. I know now what kind of questions to think about ahead of time, and maybe that will ease my nerves a little when I actually have an interview. I will most likely schedule another interview before I have a real interview to prepare for, but this time rather than preparing for a specific interview, I was more just trying to get an idea of what I should keep in mind for next time.

Joseph Viscuso – Blog Post 3

Today I attended a marketing career expo to satisfy my final blog requirement. While at the event I learned quite a lot about the field of marketing, which is something I am quite interested in. As of now I have my intended major as business management, but I always had an interest in marketing. I enjoy talking to people and I want to be able to travel when I work. It is a dream of mine to be working for a company that would send me all over the world. A month in France? I’m down. Two weeks in Tokyo? I’m already out the door. Even if the travelling is relegated to within the US, I would cherish that job. And the field of marketing is where I have a pretty good shot at making that dream job a reality. I am also really into pop culture; a self- proclaimed nerd dare I say. In the field of marketing this is actually desired by many. Compared to most other “suit and tie” business jobs Baruch grooms us for marketing is unique in that it embraces expression. The primary goal for a marketer, per the expo, is to show their respective company in a positive light to the public. Whether this be through social media, television, the internet, or even spoken word, many times the creativity of these marketers is remembered. Jingles of companies, slogans, even colors are all done by someone in the marketing field. And that interests me more than any “normal” business job does. After attending this career expo, I may be experiencing a change of heart in regard to my intended major. And that is what college is all about, embracing and accepting change. I truly enjoyed this expo and am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to meet so many people in the field of work that interests me so much.

Career Post- Kate Eidman

I attended the Hillel Tech Fair event at Baruch during club hours on Thursday. My club that I’m part of, Tamid, c0-hosted the event. It’s a startup tech fair where they have speakers from different start-up companies based in New York tell us about their business and after there’s time to network with them. It’s a great opportunity to talk with educated working people and hopefully get an internship. It was a great event to get my face out there and learn how to talk to professionals. They also had a fun game where they placed 5 hidden prizes in the Multi-purpose room. The five prices were an amazon echo, a 20$ amazon giftcard, a 15$ starbucks giftcard, a portable charger, and a 10$ chipotle giftcard. I sadly didn’t find or win any of the prizes but I thought it was a cute idea and make the event not just about work but make it enjoyable. A few start-up companies that were there were Superr, Chatdymano, and Como.

How to Study Effectively Blog- David Tawil- FRO 1000

I almost always get coffee and food before I start my work. Without energy from coffee and food, I have noticed that I can’t accomplish as much. When I have to seriously concentrate on my work and studying, I’ll go to the fifth floor in the library. I also go to the study pods sometimes. If I am doing less intensive work and studying, I usually go to the student lounge on the second floor. I also go for quick walks outside the building in between long work and study sessions. I have noticed that these quick walks are necessary to clear my mind and it’s not very healthy to sit inside for a prolonged amount of time. Without the outdoor exposure, I feel that I have a higher chance of getting very stressed and I would accomplish less because of that. During class, I usually listen to the teacher first and absorb their teaching and then I take notes afterwards. This is because taking notes mindlessly is ineffective for proper learning. This is especially true in math class.

Spare Time Blog- David Tawil- FRO 1000

When I have a lot of spare time to use in Baruch, I spend it studying and eating. This is because I prefer to do my homework and studying before I leave school so that I can relax at home. I also go to the student lounge on the second floor and hang out with friends during my free time. Although it can be loud and distracting during certain times, I can usually do work and study effectively in the lounge. I sometimes go to the third floor and play pool and ping pong with my friends. I also go to different clubs and meetings and connect with other student and talk about common interests. During break in the lounge, I order lunch with friends. I love having long breaks in between classes because it’s a privilege that I never received in high school. I also study with my friends in the library when I need them to teach me something I don’t understand. I also like participating in some of the events that are held daily in school.
