According to Scholars, the following are some of the myths and misconceptions regarding Elderly Depression:

  1. Depression in the elderly is more likely to be caused by psychological factors

Fact: Psychological factors are in fact protective against depression in older populations. Moreover, age-related biological factors may be linked to elderly depression.

2. Older adults more often experience the bodily symptoms of depression.

Fact: Symptoms of depression in the elderly community are generally similar to those in younger and older adults.

3. Depression is more common in older adults.

Fact: Depression in older adults is in fact much lower than younger and middle-aged adults, indicating that depression may be less likely to occur as you get older. 

4. It is more difficult to treat depression in the elderly.

Fact: Older adults respond to psychotherapy and electroconvulsive therapy at a similar rate to younger and middle-age adults.
