1). How does audience affect what we write (content) and how we write it (rhetoric)?

What we write and how we write depends on who our audience is, so yes, the audience it does affect the content and rhetoric form. How? When talking with our families we express ourselves different compare when talking with strangers. Same thing is when writing, but using written words instead. When knowing our audience, we have to make sure that we get to persuade them, they are the ones that we are trying to deliver message to. In project 3, our audience was not just the readers or American Council Literacy or professor, but actually the main focus was on literacy, illiterate people. We figured that once we persuade this group of people than along the way we will persuade readers, professor etc.

2). Explain how a person can be rhetorically manipulated, and describe some consequences of being rhetorically manipulated.

As a reader I never thought I can be manipulated in any ways, when reading an article. I guess I didn’t know what rhetorical manipulation is. In this semester I learnt that this is a “tool” writers use when trying to persuade an audience. Using methods as ethos/logos and especially pathos to approach the audience with emotion and empathy.
As a writer I start using pathos to persuade my audience. For ex. I used it throughout the project 3. When talking about illiterate people, I gave an example of someone who is illiterate. Struggles she was facing when being an illiterate. It was emotion, sadness. I felt like this emotional connection with the audience its going to bring the best out of my writing and I’m on the path to persuade them. This was “manipulation” at some point, because instead of just giving facts (logos) I chose appeal to emotion (pathos) to bring my audience closer.

3). What have you learned about writing in different disciplines (humanities/social sciences/business contexts)?

I learnt that is always important to know what discipline our academic paper is. When the discipline is a social science, we need to explain the procedure and analyze the experiment we did, so using methodology. I like to call it, the practice research done in writing. In the discipline of humanities, we get to do more readings researches or theoretical writings. Discipline of business context its different compare to these two. It is formal way to share information professionally, depending on the purpose of context.
I learnt what is expected in one discipline, it may not be expected on another one, because each discipline has their own style, context, purpose and audience.
