The reading by Lev Manovich called “The Language of New Media: Chapter 1, What is new Media” was very interesting to me because I learned many things about media that I’ve never thought about before. I always thought media emerged in in the late 80’s and 90’s with the invention of the computer, yet that is not the case. Media has existed many centuries before the invention of computers. As I read, I learned that the type of media we have today would have never existed if it was not for the media that existed way before ours. Media has revolutionized throughout many decades while simultaneously developing many different functions to it.
Things like the development of the photo camera, film camera etc. are all forms of media creation (Manovich, 35). These things are so old news to us, that we do not even care to think about how much of a huge impact these tools have had on the world when it was first developed, and how it changed the world as well. When media tools first come out, they tend to have a huge impact on our way of viewing things and living. It is stated in the reading that with the invention of the camera, film recorders, etc there was now photo archives, audio archives and film archives which then created a greater need for new technologies. These new technologies were needed for storing, organizing and efficient access to those materials (Manovich, 35). This is so interesting because we use so many of these technologies but we never think about why they were invented in the first place. Now that I begin to think about technology, I come to realize that the reason why we have so many different ways of communicating is because there was once a great need for better forms of communication, and since then we have come a long way. All of the different technologies with different function that we possess of today were all developed because there was once a need for these technologies. We might take all these media and technology for granted today, but learning all of these things about media helps one appreciate all technologies and media we have today.
