Something to know about me is that I am not a really good writer. I often struggle a lot in grammar, being descriptive, and analyzing. So when taking my first college English class I knew I was going to struggle because a college English class was going to be a lot different than my previous one. I am also not good at vocabulary I tend to use simple words and not high vocabulary. So something that can change over the course of the semester is that yes I still make grammar mistakes but not as much as I used to before taking the class. Also, the work we have done in class has helped me be more analytical. I often read things but don’t really see a meaning but this class has helped me analyze what we read. Which has improved my writing because I now I’m able to analyze a reading and write about it. In addition, I am also able to write more now then back then. I used to struggle in meeting the writing requirements in high school. But now I’m able to write the amount of words I am supposed which is something I have improved in. One work I am mostly proud of is my third paper. Although it may not have been the best one due to the grading. I am really proud of it because in that paper I did research and I learn many new things. It was not a paper where it was just for my English class and I had to do it because I had to. But it’s a paper where I was able to learn about the different types of parenting styles and how it can affect someone. I was able to read about something interesting and write about it. I still struggle with grammar, I make many grammar mistakes and it is something that I’m planning to work on because as a college student, my grammar should be better than what it is. I would say I’m a decent writer compared to how I used to write back in high school. I feel like I have improved but there are still things I need to work on.

We did various reading in English class and I learn a lot from each reading but one issue that has stayed with me is the struggle to learn a new language. I also went through that situation of learning a new language and adapting to it so I know it’s a struggle. The first story we did “The first day” was a story that I was able to connect because I basically had the same story with my mother. She didn’t have an education but wants the best for me just as the story. The concepts of Identity and representation are important in society because it basically is an image of ourselves, how we are seen by others. My identity really has not changed over the course of the semester.

My first semester in college has been alright, I realized that it’s true what everyone says that one must actually sit down and study for a test and you just can’t take a test without studying. I saw this with math, at first I didn’t really study for my first two test and I didn’t do great on them but for my last two which was the last math test and final I did take some time and study and I’m very proud of the outcome. At first I thought I was going to fail my math class and that I would have to retake the class but it didn’t happen and I would be able to move on to the next math class. Therefore this is something I struggle with during the semester but it is also rewarding because I improved. Something that college has surprised me with it’s time management. I bought an agenda where I write down the things that I need to do and it has honestly helped me alot. It surprised me because I’ve never really owned an agenda,, i thought that they were not useful but now I know I am wrong. Therefore this semester has taught me a lot and I have grown as a person both in my personal and academic life.

After reading Juno Diaz story “Fiesta 1980”,  I became really interested in the topic of parenting styles.Junior was raised by an Authoritarian father who was in charge of the family decisions. Being raised with this type of parenting style really affected Junior during his teenage years. However, I am curious to know if the way someone was raised can also affect later on in the future like in adulthood and if it can impact someone on the way they raise their future children. For example, if someone was raised with permissive parents would that person also raise their future children the same way they were raised. After doing some research I found out that there are four different types of parenting styles which are Authoritarian, Permissive, Uninvolved and Authoritative. Each one is different from one another and each one can have positive or negative effects on the children. So far I found out that people who are raised with Authoritative parents tend to be more successful in the future and have better leadership skills. I also found out that parenting styles can affect social,cognitive, and psychological development. Authoritarian parenting can cause depression in children or teenagers as well as low self esteem. Also, there’s really no respect in permissive parenting as it tends to be more or a son-friend relationship and not parent. Children don’t really look at their parents as a parental figure but more of a friend.

Therefore, I will be looking for information about the four different types of parenting styles and I will also be looking at how parenting styles can affect someone’s social, cognitive, and psychological development. I will then be using that information I found out, to analyze whether being raised a certain way has a relationship with the way one chooses to raise their future children. So will children that were raised with permissive parents also raise their future children with permissive parenting styles.

A community I am a part of is the Mexican Community. I was raised with both of my parents and since both of them are Mexican I feel so proud to be part of this community. Being part of this community also means enjoying the culture, such as the food, music, fashion, and the family. One important thing about the Mexican community is that families are always together no matter the situation. So if you ever have a problem, you won’t be alone and you can always count on your family.I think this is important because not all people are close together with their families. The food is also great, everyone likes it and many people try making it there own way. I also like the fact that people who are part of the Mexican community are hard working. There are many Mexicans fathers who come to the United States to get a job and earn money so they can build a house in Mexico and to send money to their families. This shows the sacrifices they do in order to succeed. They leave their wives and children in Mexico so they can get a better living.

A problem in the Mexican community is that they often face racism in the United States just for being Mexican. Ever since the trump election people have showed hate towards Mexican because of the way the president talks about them. He has said that Mexicans are rapists, drug dealers and that they are bringing crimes and problems to the United States. Because of this people have showed hate towards Mexicans. This is a problem that just doesn’t seem to stop because Mexicans basically go through this everyday whether at work or in the streets. Some ways that this problem can be solved is to work hard and don’t get in trouble with the law. To show everyone that Mexicans are not what the president says and that they are hard workers who are just trying to succeed.

A Popular culture movie I would choose would be Avatar. This movie was filmed back in 2009 and it was directed by James Cameron. The movie took about ten years to make and it is two hours and forty-five minutes long. The film cost about $280 million to produce. The film is about Jake Sully who is paralyzed from the waist down. He is send on a mission who was supposed to be completed by his twin brother, but his brother was killed. Jake was sent on this mission to learn and become one of the avatars so that the outside people can get in and they would destroy the insides people home. Jake eventually learned everything he was supposed to. He even fell in love with an avatar called Neytri. Since Jake was paralysd he could not use his legs but as an Avatar he could run, jump, and do anything with his legs. However, He then realized that he had to choose between a world he used to live in and a world he now feels safe and he calls home. He decided to stay because he gained their trust and he had to protect them. This movie is known by a lot of people. It has had a total of 112 nominations winning two Golden Gloves and three Oscars. Avatar is a movie that anyone can watch and it is easy to understand. It’s been ten years since the movie came out but people still watched it. Because so many people have watched Avatar, three new Avatar movies have been confirmed to come out in the next few years.

An important issue to me is Immigration. Many people come to the United States because they want a better life for themselves or for their families. They want to have a job, education, and just live the life that they may not be able to live somewhere else. Immigration actually benefits the United States in many ways. For example, immigrants can strengthen the economy by creating businesses and making jobs for other people. They also raise the number of consumer goods sold. There’s also more diversity in the U.S with Immigrants they come from different cultures so there’s new food and new things for Americans. Therefore, Immigration is an important topic to me because it doesn’t hurt anyone and people are just trying to accomplish their dreams.

I chose this article because in the article it states how the president Trump, is trying to do whatever he can so immigrants won’t come to the United States. But his ways are not good and they are hurting people. He had an idea to shoot people’s legs when crossing the border so that would slow them down. I understand that he doesn’t want immigrants in the U.S but shooting people is not a way to stop them. They aren’t hurting anyone all they want is a better future.

After reading both perspectives on writing the first draft, I reflect the most to George Dila’s idea on revising the first draft as many times as I can. I think it is important to revise your paper as you are writing it because you are making it better and you are saving yourself time. For example, if you just write your paper and don’t revise it as you are doing it then you will have to start over again and that’s wasting time. I also see the point in Lamott strategy but I personally agree more with Dila’s, I’m trying to make first draft as good as it can be so when I’m working on my second one it can be better.

There are a lot of things I care about but at the moment due to a recent movie I watched, I care about healthcare. Healthcare is important because accidents occurred and you don’t know what can happen today or tomorrow. There are some people who don’t have health insurance so if they get sick or injured they might not get the help they need because there’s no money and their situation can get worse. Healthcare also protects you from high medical cost. For example, if you have a serious accident that may require a surgery a health insurance can help you cover the surgery and you won’t have to deal with medical bills that can traumatize you. Also, your health insurance can cover the amount of days you are in a hospital. Staying in a hospital under the surveillance of doctors is expensive so you want to save money that can be useful for recovery. Healthcare is also important because you improve your health by going to a doctor. You can go see an eye doctor, a dentist,or get vaccines. With a health insurance you are healthy. Children need health insurance the most since they are growing up they need to make sure that they are healthy so they won’t miss school and they won’t get others sick. Having a health insurance gives people a longer life and it allows people to live a productive life. If you are healthy, you can do various things like being able to work so you can make a living. Therefore, I care about health care because I need to make sure my body is fine and with a health insurance I can see a doctor if i’m not feeling well. A health insurance also helps me save money and live a better life. Everyone should have a health insurance no matter their situation. Everyone deserves to have and live a healthy life.

This is a picture of my friends and I hanging out at Dave and Busters. It was the end of junior year and we were going into our senior year of high school. We were excited for our last year so we decided to meet up and celebrate all the work we had done junior year. It was kind of complicated for all of us to meet up because some of my friends were working and they didn’t have time to actually hang out. I also had a friend who was traveling and we weren’t sure if she was going to make it. There were also two more friends who just weren’t able to come and hang out. Therefore, something you can’t see in this picture is the struggle it took for us to hang out. Another thing you can’t see in this picture is us trying to fit in the picture and posing for the picture. This is a photo-booth picture so we had a certain amount of time to actually take the picture. We actually took a lot of pictures and each one of us has a different picture they are not all the same.  After hanging out at Dave and Busters, my friends and I went out to eat at my friends dad restaurant. It was our first time being there and the food was really good. Overall, what’s hidden in this picture is our strong bond. We have been friends for four years and for now we are all separated in different colleges but we are still in touch and we plan to hang out as group soon to celebrate our fall semester in college.
