Representation-Janice chan

https://youtu.be/9SmQOZWNyWE

i choose this video as representation. I believe this shows Asian representation in the American industry. I feel like this is a very recent occurrence that didn’t happen very often in the past. Also growing up i didn’t see any Asians in movies or Hollywood and the music industry. As an Asian American i think that it feels nice to finally have a group or band represent in the American industry.

Squid Game Recommendation

My recommendation for the class would be a kdrama that came out on Netflix called Squid game (aka 오징어 게임 in korean). It recently came out and can be found on Netflix. I think it was actually based on a real situation that happened in Korea a couple years back when people actually got kidnapped and brought to a mysterious island and couldn’t be found, at least that’s what I read from an article. The kdrama is basically about people in desperate situations who would go to crazy lengths to gain money. In the show, there are hundreds of contestants, who are in terrible debt and need cash so therefore they participate in the game. With the hopes of winning and being able to have a chance at life without loan sharks and shame. Where there’s a series of games they all played as children but the stakes of the game are high. The main character of Squid game is Gi Hun, the show is based on him and how he is in a desperate situation. He is in lots of debt and lives with his old mother and with a gambling obsession he lost custody of his young daughter. Throughout the show, you can see him trying to run from loan sharks because of his debt. His ex-wife also remarried and has custody of his daughter and will be moving to America with her new family so his goal throughout the show is to try and get the amount of money to repay his debt and regain custody of his daughter before she forgets him. Suddenly he is offered a business card by a strange man to have another chance at life, after playing a game with him. So he takes it and like him, hundreds of others take the opportunity as well. Basically, the whole “game” of the show is people risking their lives for a chance to redeem themselves in society without the worry of debt. My favorite character of the show is actually not the main character, but a girl named Sae Byeok. She shows that despite her young age she believes she can be stronger for her younger brother. I think my attention gravitated towards her because despite her obstacles she overcomes them with a strong will to give her younger brother a better life rather than being in an orphanage. The show itself is only one season long which is tragic because of how amazing it is. I think the show itself is honestly something very new to the industry and I have never seen a show made like this. It shows such a realistic portrayal of life. Also the “value” our society holds money at nowadays. Money is such a sensitive topic to most people because it’s easily spent and some may either find it hard or easy to earn. I believe this show really does show how “money does make people do crazy things”.  After the show it really got me thinking if people in our society were given this chance at this game, how many people would actually take it? Overall I really enjoyed this show and I hope those who take my recommendation will enjoy it too!

Vershawn Young & Jamilia Lyiscott Response

My initial reaction to the text was that I understood the situation about dialect/ forms of language because I see things similar to this in my everyday life. People speaking different forms of English whether its “formal/nonformal/professional and etc. I see people getting judge by others because of the way they choose to speak and talk. I think something Young and Lyiscott have in common is that they both understood the situation and incorporated how they felt about it in their writing. My main takeaway of the video was that everyone may have different abilities to speaking but many find their own more comfortable to speak and it’s completely normal to be confident or speak however you want. In the text, my main takeaway was it being mentioned dialects aren’t such a big deal and everyone has their own, and it shouldn’t matter to anyone else wherever you decide to use it. Whether it be at home, school, or work.

I think both Young and Lyiscott use unconventional strategies for conveying their messages by giving their opinions to the audience. Then allowing the audience to have room to think and reflect on their opinions after reading or watching their piece to realize what they believe in. I think the two connect to each other very well because one talks about dialect while the other talks about forms of English. So it’s a very similar concept to each other. For me, I think the video was very powerful and grabbed my attention. It stood out to me because It was a video/illustration so I was able to physically see and hear the speaker at the same time allowing me to feel the message being delivered more. Rather than reading off of a text, I think I agree with the authors, people should be able to say what they want in whatever dialect or form of language they wish. Because speaking is a form of expression and people form impressions and meet other people with their voice first. So they should be allowed to use what they can and want to use.

Janice’s Thoughts on first drafts readings

After reading Anne Lamott, “Shitty First Drafts” (in  JTC) and George Dila,Rethinking the Shitty First Draft” It made me reconsider my thoughts on first drafts. I think after reading these two pieces, I was able to embrace the fact that a first draft is not always perfect but that is okay because you could always revise and edit it to make it better. I think personally my own writing process is quite simple. I approach whatever prompt or topic is given to me and I think about how to answer it and where my opinion stands. Then I move forward in formulating my thoughts into writing and trying to put it into a format or organization that is easy to understand. To be honest, I would like to adjust my own processes as a writer because sometimes after the first draft I struggle with pinpointing and revising my own writing. What currently works for my writing process is that I kind of just trust the process and write whatever comes to mind. The most difficult part of the actual writing process would probably be actually starting the writing piece or ending it because after saying my thoughts and ideas. I struggle with concluding the whole thing after and sometimes even where to start because I’m not sure how to get into my ideas.

mother tongue-amy tan

In the essay mother tongue by Amy Tan, She displays to the readers her point of view as an Asian woman. At one point in the essay, she shows her mother on the side talking to her while she tries to code switch on a phone call with a stockbroker pretending to be her mother. I think this specific scene created a very powerful image because it shows how different the English she spoke in comparison to her mothers. The relation between language and identity is language is a means of communication that can be learned and usually is learned when you are a child. Identity is something you cannot change and that you are born with. Usually with identity comes language that you learn and communicate with. The term “Mother tongue” refers to the language you learn at home before you start school and its also referred to usually as your first or native language. I think Amy tan uses it at the title of this essay to show the audience, her mother and her experience living with her mother that cannot speak English that well. Also to share how throughout her life she has to do many things a normal child wouldn’t have to do in order to help her mother out. I think I could relate this essay to my own experience as a child of an immigrant but fortunately for me, my mother had come to the united states when she was young so she went to high school and college in the USA so she was able to speak English. But I heard many cases from my friends with immigrant parents as well that have to help with phone class, translations and etc.

First Day response- janice chan

Upon reading Edward P. Jones, “The First Day”, I felt that it was really relatable. When the narrator states “then she shakes her head and says we were at the wrong school, that we should be at walker-jones.” This shows that when the narrator and their mother went into the school, the women at the school was quick to judge them even though there’s usually more than what meets the eye. I thought that women at the school discriminated against or stereotyped them based on what she assumed and because of the area they lived in. I personally think this left a strong impression on me because I believe it has happened many times to many, myself included. Even if you are quick to judge you shouldn’t, go out of your way to act upon it and make them feel lesser than you because there’s no reason for them to. I think the author’s entrance to the school was unfair because they discriminated against her in a way that people should not be treated. An element of this narrative that could be possibly a theme because it’s showing the audience and readers how this discrimination and unfairness can affect everyone.

Janice Chan introduction post

Hi everyone! My name is Janice Chan. My pronouns are she/her. I was born and raised in Queens, New York. I come from a Chinese background so I am a Chinese American. I can speak some Chinese but if we’re being honest it’s not the best. I view myself as a hardworking and determined individual. I believe if I put my mind to my goals I can achieve them. To others, it may seem like I’m outgoing but I think personally I’m a bit introverted. It takes lots of courage talking to someone you don’t know or people in general so I am currently still working on it. Hobbies that I have are, dancing and listening to music. In my free time, I try to learn dances off youtube or take dance classes as well. My favorite music genre would most likely be pop music because it puts me in a good mood. A fun fact would be I don’t really have a language preference on the pop music I listen to because I believe that music is a universal language everyone can enjoy. For my favorite food, I’m just going to say I don’t exactly have one since I love food in general and I’m too indecisive to choose one only. I also really enjoy going to cafes to study and do work and enjoy their cafe drinks and food. My favorite cafe drink would most likely be tea. During the unfortunate events of covid where we could not go out and dine in cafes, I learned how to make my own delicious cafe drinks and desserts at home such as a matcha latte, coffee, bubble tea, and macaroons. I hope in this semester I can meet new people with similar hobbies as me so I can achieve my goals for this semester and create study groups and learn from my peers as well.
