Homework 10/26/2022 Representation Jiahua Lin

The media I chose for representation is a TV show called Fresh Off the Boat. This part of the video shows an accurate representation on how Asian parents feel when their kids get good grades. I chose this clip because it is exactly what my parents did for me when I was in middle and high school. They would make me go to Saturday and Sunday school to learn advanced subjects. What I found noteworthy is that they show where Asian students go to learn subjects beyond their grade and being able to succeed in school.

Gloria Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” 10/19/2022 Jiahua Lin

From our reading of Gloria Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” one theme I chose and personally related to was “talking back” for telling the teacher on how to pronounce a name correctly. Similarly to my essay, saying a name correctly is important for the person themselves but for those who are pronouncing their name. A name identifies who you are in society and that name can influence your future. A miscalling of a name shouldn’t be taken lightly and shouldn’t be ignored. As stated in Gloria Anzaldua’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”, “I remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess-that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler. I remember being sent to the corner of the classroom for “talking back” to the Anglo teacher when all I was trying to do was tell her how to pronounce my name. “If you want to be American, speak American.’ If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong.” This quote shows that students were punished for “talking back” and that they were getting told by their teachers to go back to their country because they spoke another language besides American. I could relate to this because I had to apply for a school when I came to the United States and once it was my turn to go into the school , the teachers looked at me and asked “What is your name?” My parents replied to them saying my legal name and they were confused. The teacher repeated my name, and my parents corrected her. As the teacher said my name again, she didn’t bother correcting herself when my parents told her how to say it. Although we told her many times and my parents gave her time to say it, she still lazily said it like she wanted to move on her day. My family and I were shocked when we first heard this because in China the teachers were strict and eager in pronouncing Chinese and foreign name even though they may not speak any English. Instead of being punished for “talking back” or going back to China for having a Chinese name and not an English name ,we left on our own to look for another school. Knowing someone’s name establishes a relationship between one another but if you don’t know what their name is or how to pronounce it, it could lead to problems.

Jiahua Lin Introduction

Hi my name is Jiahua Lin or you can call me by Jerry. My pronouns are he, him or his. I currently live in Brooklyn, New York but originally I lived and was born in Guangdong, China. As an immigrant from China, coming to America was a step towards a better future for both my parents and for myself. Starting out in America was at first a struggle for my entire family. My family and I didn’t speak English so getting a job and place to live was hard. Overtime my parents learned some English to adapt to the neighborhood and I attend school. I was an ESL student because I needed help learning English. At first it was hard but gradually I evolved into a normal student. As a first Asian America generation education is very important. As someone who is the only one in the family that has an education higher than high school, I must lead my future and my family to a better life. One of many things I like to do is to play sports. Sports is one way I get my mind off of things. My favorite sports I like to play is basketball and badminton. I used to play basketball everyday after school with my friends for hours until the pandemic happened. Another thing I like to do is math in general. I think I was born into liking math because I was able to use the abacus at an early stage. Anything in math regarding solving problems or finding a solution is in my interest. Math has lead me to come to Baruch college as a finance or accounting major because it is a top public school when it comes to these majors. This is a picture of two adults which symbolizes my parents. My parents has been there since I was born and has been my motivator. I think my interest in math came from them. Even during through the darkest time they have been there for me when I needed help the most.

Jiahua Lin – The First Day

The First Day by Edward P Jones is about a girl who has struggles attending school while her mother is trying her best to get her in. The author’s description of her entrance into school can we shown with imagery and inferencing. From the beginning of the story it can be seen that her mom really cares and is serious about her daughter going to school. As stated “My mother has uncharacteristically spent nearly an hour on my hair that morning, plaiting and replaiting so that now my scalp tingles” (Jones 1). This quote shows her mother taking time doing her daughter’s hair until her scalp tingles. As we further read on, we realize that her mother probably didn’t have an education as she was growing up. Jones stated that “The woman still seems not to understand. i ”1 can’t read it. I don’t know how to read or write, and I’m askin you to help me.” (2) This quote explains the education of the mother of not knowing how to read and asking for other people to help her. To me education is very important for everyone and it impacted me heavily because I’m the only son in my family that has a higher education past high school.
