Module 11 – Monday, November 15th

Heads up: Assignment 2 is due today by 11:59 pm in my email, in a Word doc.
We are also a month from your final essay (Assignment 3) being due (Monday, December 13th).

Here’s what you need to do this week (1.5 – 2 hours):

– Read the following from JTC:
> “Finding Evidence,” by Andrea A. Lunsford & John J. Ruszkiewicz (pp. 150-159)
> “Questions to Consider as you Choose Sources,” by Lisa Ede (pp. 165-167)
> “When Should I Quote, Paraphrase, or Summarize?” by Lisa Ede (pp. 181-183)

– In the comments below, please answer the following questions about the texts:

1. For the topic you chose for your final paper, what kind of evidence do you need? Why? Can you give examples of sources you may use? (This does not bind you, of course, though by now you should have some idea of the sources you’re going to use.)

2. Again, in relation to your topic: when do you think it will be most helpful to quote directly? To paraphrase (quote in your own words, but without forgetting to insert the reference)? To summarize? Each time, briefly explain why.

If you’re in doubt:

Friday meeting:
– We’ll discuss readings and responses.
– I’ll introduce Assignment 3.
– We’ll do some in-class research: you’ll be looking for your sources for Assignment 3.
– We’ll do some Reflective Annotated Bibliographies (RefAnnBibs) for your external sources in Assignment 3.
– I’ll answer any questions.

The evidence that I need is honestly very straight forward. I need something that supports almost every detail I mention as my topic is a non-fictional informative article about China and cryptocurrency. I need something to also support showing my reasoning for why the article was published.

I think quoting directly would be valid at almost any point in the assignment as I previously said that I need to show evidence of what the publisher said to not accidentally dilute and make the original text mean something different that what it was meant to be. To paraphrase, i’ll do it at points, mainly when I want to just quickly explain something small. Summary should be a little after the intro of the assignment.

    1. For my topic, the evidence I will need is mostly on the impact of the pandemic, how New Zealand was affected by it and some more evidence on the changes the Prime Minister made. I need these sources and facts because even though my article provides good information, it tends to be a bit bias and not explain everything done.
    2. I believe it will be most helpful to quote directly will be when I restate the Prime Minister’s quotes and the way she contributed to her country’s uprise from this pandemic. So I will do it here and there because it is important to note what she truly said.

    1. I would just need good hardcore evidence that can enhance the argument that I’m trying to make while also ( if it were an argumentative essay) to disprove another point made b the same topic. Anything related to my topic, mostly google but if there’s an article or something that is attached to the topic then I would use that then to make m point credible and persuasive.
    2. After my intro and I have presented my claim I would introduce like a topic sentence and maybe add a little background so that the reader can know one of the pieces of evidence I’m trying to explain and then there I would include the actual source. Finally after that source I would elaborate on the evidence explain it well and then give some thought to make my topic persuasive as well as my reader understand the topic very well. I would try avoid to summarize unless if I need to case I just feel like summarizing the source would just be redundant and very unnecessary when I’m writing about the argument.

    1. For my topic, I would need evidence that brings attention to more cons of bitcoin currency and also a few pros of it. In the article I chose, I feel like the author only focused on one main con of bitcoin currency, which had to do with the economy. I personally feel that there are more cons to bitcoin currency other than the potential downfall of a country’s economy, so I want to find evidence that highlights more cons on bitcoin currency. I would also need evidence on how cryptocurrencies affect other parts of the world as well.
    2. I think it would be helpful to directly quote evidence from my desired source in the body paragraphs of the paper. When I don’t want to go too much in depth with a specific point, I’ll paraphrase the evidence I found. I think it would be appropriate to summarize when first introducing your topic to the audience and maybe when you want to give some background before you introduce a new piece of evidence. It’s good to summarize, but we shouldn’t do this throughout the entire paper. Analysis counts too.

1.For the topic I chose, I need evidence on how different political leaders handled the coronavirus pandemic and how their decisions impacted their countries. I have actually chosen a few articles that I found from Baruch’s library. Each article is specifically related to the main points I planned to include in the paper.
2.I think it will be most important to quote directly when I need to support a strong claim I make. Direct quotes will also be used to strengthen my argument. It will be best to paraphrase when giving context or explaining something in my paper. I mainly plan to summarize in my introduction and conclusion.

  6. ALVIN VATHAPALLY

    1. The type of evidence I need will be articles and information for people that are highly qualified in the topic I am writing about. Also revered news companies such as Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/sites/philippsandner/2021/02/22/decentralized-finance-will-change-your-understanding-of-financial-systems/?sh=195ea5e15b52) will be heavily considered for my sources.
2.It will be best to quote directly when I am trying to get a clear and concise point across. It will be best to paraphrase when i am trying to support my claim or giving context. It will be best to summarize when i am trying to end a body paragraph off or even when writing my conclusion.

  7. JADA WILLIAMS

    1. For the topic I chose I would need evidence that defends the authors claims. The type of evidence I would use would be articles that talks about college students not following their dreams compared to chose who did, and etc. This would be beneficial because it would intensify the message behind the article and how it allowed the readers to connect with the author.
    2. I think you should always have a direct quote from the article because it heightens your usage of ethos. After select a quote you should be able to do a quick summary to prove you understand the topic you’re writing about.

  8. KARLA MARTINEZ

    1. I will need evidence that includes the ways world leaders handled the pandemic and also I can include statistical evidence because in the article there are number analyses about the number of citizens that support the decisions of the Prime Minister. I can find information like this for other places and compare the information together in order to support my argument.
2.. It will be most helpful to quote directly when I am talking about the points made within the article that demonstrate strong evidence about the success of the prime minister. I can summarize when I have quotes in a paragraph already but I just want to add extra information to further support the quotes in that paragraph.

  9. DARIAN CHEN

1.The evidence I need is on other leaders that handled the pandemic well. I would also need some evidence on the current state of New Zealand’s leader because the article may have been outdated. I might also need to find and understand different types of leaderships used through out history.
    2. I would paraphrase when summarizing and talking about minor details. When it comes to super important evidence I would quote from the source. When writing a summary it should be kept short and simple. Because when writing an argument you want to show that you understand.

  10. AMISHA BAIDYA

    1. Since I chose the topic of Bitcoin in China, I need to find evidence to showcase how the Bitcoin operations in China can potentially disrupt the economy because China reinforces their reason behind taking action to stop Bitcoin operations is that it can upset their economic stability as well as their political image. I might need to include statistics of the fluctuations in Bitcoin values from past years to the present to showcase why China is against the use of Bitcoin for transactions.
    2. It would be helpful to quote directly if there is a stated policy or statistical information that connects to the current dilemma of Bitcoin in China. I would paraphrase when I need to explain a term where I would state a simplified definition of a word and also when to explain the context of the given article.

  11. KAINAT ALI

    1. For my topic I feel like I need more evidence on how exactly cryptocurrency like bitcoin is affecting the Chinese economy. I can add more facts and statistics as well as more pros and cons about cryptocurrency as a whole on the economy and not just one form of it.

    2. I think it would be helpful to take a direct quote when the author talks about a statistic/specific fact or if the author inserts a quote that is best worded in the way that it is. I would paraphrase when the information is heavy with the wording and I am able to break it down and explain it clearly, removing the extra unnecessary details.

  12. DYHARA HERASME

    1. For my essay, I will need research and data on how artists can make a living doing their passion and work. Showing that you do not need to be an engineer and that you can make it on your own.
    2. I think when I quote directly will be the data and statistics and the exact advice the article is giving to people. I would only paraphrase when the information is very wordy and long and I can sum it up with my own words.

  13. LUCAS SILVERIO

    1. For the topic I chose I will be needing a lot of statistics. I am doing the article on bitcoin so I need statistics to back up my claims and prove how useful it really could be. I can also use different articles on how it has effected different economies and the impact it could potentially have in the future.
    2. It will be most helpful to directly quote different governments or even companies stances on crypto. That can make a big difference on the future of the currency so having their direct quotes can be very useful.

  14. JESSICA GARCIA

The evidence that I will need for my topic would be for example a research that can rely on the theory of Blaise Pascal maybe results from a survey where people get asked about how often they use their imagination to bring back a memory or how often they travel just because they feel like they need to experience new things.

I think the most helpful quote will be placed when I am trying to support a claim, this will help make it as accurate as possible so it can be reliable and trustful.
