“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” – Marcus Aurelius
This is a quote that I read in 9th grade when I first read meditations and, it is something that has stuck with me since then. It has driven my perspective in everything from personal relationships to politics. For me, it means that there are many sides to a story and, even something that may be believed as absolute by most can be false when looked at from a different perspective.
Very interesting point of view. I personally don’t agree with relativism as a whole, but there are definitely many sides to a story.
There’s something to this, Griffin, as Zach mentions. I do think “many sides” might not be the same thing as “equal sides,” if that makes sense. I agree there is something suspicious in believing in Truth with a capital “T”, but things like whether smoking causes lung cancer or whether slavery has had an impact on how racism manifests in disparities in generational wealth or policing seem to be more “true” than “smoking in moderation will not lead to lung cancer” or “everyone is equally suited to generate wealth or to be treated fairly by the police.”
