Things that came up:
- Visual learning (will always have something for you to look at, but please let me know if this is not enough!)
- Conversations and interactions with others helps (will try to incoroporate these)
- Slow things down (definitely true)
- Losing focus (hopefully some things in this learning module and others on writing practice and process can help)
- Financial hardship/access to food/housing
- I recommend seeking out help at the Dean of Students Page. You can find information on the Emergency Fund, Food Access, and other resources that can help folks struggling financially. Some also mentioned looking for jobs. I can’t say I know a ton under these current circumstances, but there is Baruch’s official jobs site for students (it has options for part-time work and other variables). I was also able to find something targeting Baruch students. Please let me know how I can help. I am genuinely interested in your success, whatever that looks like. So let me know how I can help. Also let me know if I missed something here as something you think should be addressed–I mostly keyed in on trends across responses, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth talking about other stuff. So let me know!!
- Having a good environment to work in, as best as you can (e.g., comfortable chair, music)
- No judgment. We are all trying our best, I always assume that. I don’t know what you are going through. Please reach out if you need help, extensions, or anything else.
Task
In a comment below, do one of the following:
- List out any other resources or advice for things mentioned above in the trends (e.g., other sources you know about finding part-time jobs, visual aids you find especially effective)
- List something that has helped as you a student since you have been in college that might help others (e.g., note taking strategy, time management approaches)

Something that has helped me out tremendously as a student since I started college was using the calendar app, or having a calendar, with every class, deadline, social activity, date, personal time off scheduled and listed. It gives me insight to when I have breaks, an assignment due, an upcoming test, or when I should get work done early in order to do other things in my schedule. Having a calendar can help with time management and give alerts for an assignment you may have forgot. I hope this helps someone!
I have found always having a blank google doc, or word page open for each class that isn’t necessarily for note taking really helps me in online school as a place to write down my thoughts. Oftentimes with distanced learning there is more time in between thinking of something and being able to share it and so I write them down so I don’t forget what I wanted to say. This document is also super useful to me later for writing topics, as I often have good ideas in class but immediately forget them when the zoom call ends.
You can always seek knowledge from your peers. Whether you have questions or concerns you think are to trivial to ask the professor directly or the whole entire group, ask a classmate. If it’s a bigger assignment, maybe you can ask someone to help proofread or give you some advice to make it better. Making connections and interacting with peers are a nice way to build the whole class environment.
You can always learn from conversations and interaction with other people. You can learn from another person’s perspective and experience, like how they got where they are and where they’re planning for the future. Deep discussion topics are also another good way to get people thinking, and hearing other people’s perspective is always interesting. I was also taught that you should “pick their brains” whenever you spend time having discussions with people.
Something that has definitely helped me since I have been in college is a comfortable chair to be in. My chair is a gaming chair that my dad had got for me and my is it the best thing ever. Some of us students are in the chair practically all day and it is important that we are comfortable and have good posture. Being comfortable definitely helps. Another thing that helps me out a lot is music, I’m always listening to music and its something that me personally always helps me pay attention and focus what I’m doing.
I found that going into the learning process in college is a lot easier when you have friends that can help you along the way. Whether it be organizational tips or study sessions, it’s good to have that support system. Having a group of friends with good values and big goals is key. One thing that helps me organize my time better is sticky notes on my mac dashboard. If you don’t have a mac I’m sure this is a feature on other platforms and you can always use real sticky notes. I have a note for each class where I write down deadlines. I have another note of things I need to get done by the next day. I find that this method helps keep everything in one place.
Something that has helped me out as a college student is seeking the helping hand specifically when it comes to professors. I always held back from receiving help since it made me feel I wasn’t smart enough to get it but I learned the hard way. Breakdowns. A simple message to the professor can go a long way and can take a load full off your shoulders. Don’t be afraid. A healthy mindset is the way to go.
Something that has helped me is being organized and having a calendar with my schedules and work to turn in. As well something that has helped me has been to write down any ideas that come to my head or things I’m interested in so I can review them in the future.
Something that has always helped me with writing is having some music on in the background that isn’t distracting. I always play some foreign music or classical music in the back so that I don’t lose track, but so that I also don’t go crazy staring at a white screen in silence.
One thing that has been helping me so far as a student is that I am not procrastinating at all with any of my classes. I still have a lot of work but I know I wouldn’t pass if I had my high school procrastination mentality.
Being a part of different class group chats has helped me as a student tremendously. Sometimes you need a question answered that you wouldn’t feel comfortable asking a teacher or just need a specific question answered quickly and group chats can be the solution to those situations. They are also a great way to connect with other likeminded students to keep yourself motivated.
One thing that helped me out in college so far is taking digital notes on my iPad. I find it so convenient and organized. I don’t have to go searching through a bunch of folders to find the lesson.
Time management. Trust your professor when they tell you have a paper due in a month. if you’re aiming to get an A on your paper, you need to utilize your time wisely during those weeks and really revise and edit your paper.
Something that has helped me the most in college is reminders app, as I have the tendency to procrastinate it’s helpful for me to set the due dates for certain assignments on my phone.
Posted for Sofy: I get governmental help for food, food stamps. They were very quick about it, and since I am a student, they are more than happy to help us out. It really is nice. Something that has helped me a lot since i became a college student is having a nice agenda. I write down everything I have to do, when it is due, and write down daily reminders until the due date of the assignemnt. It helps me tons with keeping organized.
In the past being apart of group chats and knowing when everything is due helped me tremendously. I always forget to check my assignments and when i receive notifications it helps reminds me.
