After reading the few chapters about Metaphors, and consequently realizing how prevalent they are in our language and minds, I found it pretty easy to find an article that used metaphorical language– its almost everywhere! I think using metaphorical language in newspaper titles is extremely essential in peaking reader’s interests. Certain words may, subconsciously, evoke different feelings that may ring a chord in a potential reader’s emotions. Reading an article that includes the verb “battle”, allows the reader to quickly understand that there was some sort of argument. But the clever use of the word battle evokes more feelings than another word, such as argue, might. Battle makes it sound more serious, and therefor may make someone even MORE inclined to read the paper and find out who? what? where? when? and why? Metaphorical language is extremely decisive and I think its very interesting to realize how prevalent it is all around us.
I agree with you, after reading the few chapters on Metaphors I saw how prevalent metaphors were especially in news headlines. It looks as though metaphorical language is literally everywhere but it wasn’t as obvious until reading those few chapters on metaphors. I also agree with you that metaphors are very important and practically essential in news headlines to lure readers and evoke certain emotions and feelings from them when they read certain pieces. I like how you give an example of metaphorical language with the word “battle” and explain how using such a word has such an impact on readers.
I completely agree with you. A clever headline is absolutely necessary to grab a reader’s attention. Especially the metaphor of war used in our language today. I think that a word like “battle” definitely evokes more feelings as well as more interest than “argue”. It has a serious connotation with a background of war and loved ones dying while a word like argue is used in a very casual way.
I agree with you completely. Upon doing this assignment, I thought that it would be difficult to locate a proper article, but in fact, it was hard to find a headline that was not metaphoric. This specific example of battle I think is very strong. It not only lends the reader to think- but portrays a picture of two fighting sides, weapons, and a winner.
