Amazon’s Coming After Game Companies

Amazon’s Coming After Game Companies

This headline is a great example of metaphors playing into our lives. Amazon isn’t literally coming after gaming companies, in fact, it is most definitely ahead of the gaming companies. But figuratively- Amazon is “coming after” gaming companies. It is chasing them, attempting to attack them, and most importantly, passing them. This metaphor helps show the competition of this market. It is not simply two, or multiple, companies producing multiple products. The market is a fast paced, attack filled, race. And in this particular case, by creating a new interface/product for gamers and gaming purposes, Amazon is figuratively “coming after” game companies. I thought that this headline was a great use of metaphors in real life- and showing how the use of this language actually impacts the way we view this concept in the world.

  1. I like how they relate this title so strongly to the content of the article. To game-fanatics, a play on words such as, “Amazon’s Coming After Game Companies,” can mean the difference between choosing to read this article or one that seems more interesting. The whole point is for people to read your writing, right? A title is very important for that reason. And I agree with your belief that “the use of this language actually impacts the way we view this concept in the world.” A choice of words can absolutely impact our choices and opinions on something, good or bad.

  2. I an unsure what this article is conveying. I believe it to be based on Amazon and the game-platform industry, but you seem to use a lot of the terminology over and over, creating a bit of a confusing analysis. I just wish I understood this more since I am a “gamer” at heart. I think this article could have had deeper meaning.

  3. When I read the headline, in my mind, I translated to “I’m coming after you”. So I realized that it would be something related to how Amazon wants to compete and get rid of game companies. It is indeed a great metaphor. I wish I read had this article beforehand because I love Amazon.

  4. The first thoughts that come to my mind when I read the article title are similar to yours, that Amazon wants to compete in the video game industry and create its own slice of the pie. However, I am not sure where the metaphor comes into play, as they are literally coming after the other companies business and consumers. You are correct in asserting it is a fast paced competition, but industries do not always have to be fast paced to have competitors. By doing so, you only make it harder for your competitors to catch up, but they are coming regardless.

  5. After reading this headline it seems to me that this metaphor is a war-like metaphor. In this headline, it clearly states the Amazon is coming after big gaming companies, and “coming after” implies that it is going after and going to war with those gaming companies with the launch of their new technology. This was an excellent use of a metaphor to get the readers attention.
