Drinking Coffee Elsewhere

1. Why didn’t the narrator attend the Heidi’s mother’s funeral?

2. Why did the narrator feel displaced when she arrived at Yale? What factors made her feel that way?

3. What is the significance of Heidi’s mother’s death? How does it make Dina feel?

  1. 2. I think Dina felt displaced at Yale because she wasn’t accustomed to that environment. She grew up in a community where people didn’t act in the same manner, which caused her to be closed off from everyone else. The transition into a new environment would be difficult, her personality would be the hardest to change.

  2. 1. The narrator did not attend Heidi’s mother’s funeral because they’ve got into a heated argument. Heidi was mad that Dina haven’t talked to her for two months. She assumes it is because Dina thought that she was trying to sleep with her. At the end of the argument, Dina gave no sympathy for Heidi’s mother and went to Baltimore instead of attending Heidi’s mother’s funeral.
