My creative remix idea

Knowing that my research is about the impact of coronavirus and the impact of the situation that we are living in these days on young adults; I wanted to do a cartoon or a drawing that reflects the situation that we are living in and try to show some of the feelings that some people have.

Feelings about quarantine

This is a photo taken from the window of my apartment. I chose this photo because it represents my thinking of the last six weeks. When I look down through that window, I see that I am living very far from other people, I’m just here in my apartment apart from others during this time. It was taken during the night, showing the loneliness that we are all living. In this image you can’t see people walking on the streets because during this time most of us are in our homes.

Political Cartoon:

This is a political cartoon that reveals many things about what happens when we stay in our homes. As the cartoon shows, we start to develop a variety of new habits. The habit that this cartoon shows is stress eating. Because most of us are always at home, we start to get bored, and because of it, our mind makes us feel like we are hungry but in reality, we just want to be doing something. In this case, we start eating many times in the day. We go to the refrigerator and take and look at the things there are. Something we go and just take a look. Other times we go and take something to eat.

This is not the only habit we create. There are many other bad habits we create that are not in the political cartoon. Another habit that we create is about our sleeping schedule. Because we are bored during the day. We might fall asleep. This causes not wanting to sleep during the night. And what follows this is going to sleep very late, and waking up later in the day. This cycle that we create, ruins our sleeping schedule.

We should be aware of these habits that we create. In the political cartoon, we can see that the woman uses a face mask in her house to remember herself that she has the habit of stress eating. Being aware that we have the habit, make us realize that we are under something we need to find ways to stop. The mask remember her that he do not have be going to the refrigerator and be eating all the time. The same thing with sleeping. We should be aware that if we are ruining our sleeping schedule, we must find ways to remember ourselves that we have to sleep and fix this sleeping schedule.

Coronavirus: Fact vs Fiction

This podcast covers a variety of news about coronavirus by speaking to professionals or people that was part of each section. It also explains some false aspects that are spreading, and people are falling for them, Doctor Sanjay Gupta guides us through this podcast and explain what happens in every single aspect. People that are being exposed to the different aspects are the ones explaining their experiences, which might lead to biases like being the victim, also from leaders of different institution.

The first section of this podcast is about how we people can help others. Doctor Sanjay Gupta says that we can help by donating to blood and food to food banks to have enough supply to the big amount of people that need help during this pandemic.

The second section of this podcast talks about how people are dating at distance. He says that the use of dating has increased now that we are all in our homes. The numbers of texts send is larger during this time. He tells the story of a video of a guy that used a drone to ask to a girl to be with him, and because of it, they are texting, and they are together, but with the distance.

In my point of view, the three next aspects are the ones that I find the most interesting about this podcast, and they are new things that I learned from the podcast. The first one is called analyzing antibodies. This is a different kind of test than the COVID-19 test. This is used to try to know which people are immune to the COVID-19. But this is not a famous test. However, this test can be very helpful for essential workers. People that are immune can continue their normal work life.

Another new thing that I learned, and I find interesting is about the section called “A Crisis in Our Prisons”. I find this interesting because it is about places where people must be close to another people. A testimony from a prisoner he says that not everybody wears masks and there are a lot of people that do not distant themselves from others.

The third section that I find very interesting is called “Profiting from Pandemic”. In this section, Doctor Sanjay Gupta talks about how a lot of people are using today’s situation to benefit from it. They are literally selling false hope to people that want to protect from COVID-19. Some people are selling medicine that does not work for nothing and say that it will cure COVID-19.

This is an interesting podcast that covers a lot of factors of COVID-19. It does not influence my point of view; it adds new information. I recommend this podcast to other people that want to learn about different subjects of COVID-19. The format is very simple to follow, and it’s divided into the different subjects.

What is the psychological impact of the coronavirus?

I want to talk about the psychological impact of the corona virus because it is very important to think about how the situation that we are living in it’s going to impact our mental health. I want to research about the impact of how we are going to react to any new viruses. Also, about how being in quarantine affects our mental health and our future decisions. I would like to explore these impacts in our brain.

Guide:

  • How everything started
  • Why are we in quarantine?
  • Why are we social distancing ourselves?
  • How can it impact the way we think?
  • How it can to affect our future

The Power of Social Distancing

I selected this text because I find interesting that we started to practice social distancing. The graph shows how the corona virus cases reduce by 40% in a day because of social distancing. We all are humans and being able to talk to people, meet people, and greet people have been part of our daily life. But now that we see people we like to stay away. And this is for good, to avoid the spread of corona virus. On the other hand, the practice of social distancing around this time bring a lot of question to my mind. The first question that it brings to me is what effects will it cause to our mental health in the future? I fear that this practice will have long-term negative impact to the way we interact with people. If the spreading of corona virus one day stops, I fear that people will still practice social distancing because of fear of the continuation of this virus. Maybe because of the fear of another virus, people just social distant themselves to avoid the spread or to avoid getting themselves infected by these kinds of viruses. Social distancing might also make us feel like being isolated is the safest place during all time, with virus or without virus. Another question that social distancing brings to my mind is if social distancing really stops the spreading of the virus, or are we just slowing down the inevitable. I am very curious about this since we know that the is not a cure for corona virus, and it is also very difficult to avoid. I fear that we are just slowing down something that will happen anyway, social distancing slowed down the spread but it can still reach our houses and our families. I have family that even without getting out of their homes got the virus.

Displacement #2

“NEW HAITIAN MIGRATION PATTERNS END IN DISPLACEMENT” by By Kyilah Terry (UCLA 2019)

This article is very interesting because it talks about Haitian people’s displacement. What makes this displacement interesting is that even though Haiti suffered a catastrophe that caused all Haitians to get out of the country and go somewhere else, in those countries that they go, they are not accepted, as you can read in this article. In the Dominican Republic, a law was created to denationalized many Haitians, causing migration to other places like Mexico. In Mexico, the government started to deport Haitians. This article states different reasons for Haitian displacement; these are catastrophes or policies that would give them a better life than the life they could get in Haiti. But in some countries stopped being accepted and those countries changed their policies.

Assignment #2: Ip Man 4

The movie I selected to write the analysis about displacement is Ip Man 4: The Finale which was directed by Wilson Yip. This movie was released in 2019, and it is the fourth and last movie of a series of movies. All four movies show displacement in a different way. For example, the first one shows how Chinese people were being displaced in camps during a war against Japan. The second one shows the displacement when he moved from a Chinese city called Foshan to Honk Kong, and displacement is seen when this city’s martial art teachers do not accept Ip in this city. All movies are interesting to watch because they all have an important message behind. Ip Man 4 specifically show how Chinese people are discriminated in the United States. It does not matter the place or age of the people; Chinese people are discriminated, and this movie demonstrate different ways of how it happens. One of the characters in the movie is Yonah Wan, who represents how some Chinese people are treated at American schools. She fights do defend herself but other people do not believe her, she has to “live in the shadow” under American people, because when she tries to have success she gets bullied and the other students beat her up, and the other students target her and make her look like she did things that she did not. Another character is Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is a teacher of martial arts in the United States, but other schools for American people do not believe in what he can do even though when he demonstrates to them his skills in his shows. As he says, he must fight American people in the streets all the time because he is targeted by those people. Another important character is Hartman Wu, who is a sergeant part of the US Marines Corp. Even though this character is a person that fights for the United States and he does all the possible to make the US Marine Corp. better and improve their combat skills, the American leader discriminates him and making him do a lot of extra work, and this leader reminds him all the time how superior American people is to Chinese people. The main character Ip Man shows displacement as soon I he gets to the United States. When he asks for a letter of recommendation he is instantly rejected, and his friend is reminded that he is only not fired because of his boss. After the main character fights for the Chinese people in the United States, at the end of the movie, when he realizes all of the discrimination to Chinese people in the United States he decides that his son is not going to go to the United States to study.
